Silverstone launches Nightjar NJ450-SXL fan-less SFX power-supply

Silverstone Nightjar NJ450-SXL

So out of nowhere SIlverstone decided to release an SFX size fanless 450w PSU called the Nightjar NJ450-SXL.

PC chassis, cooling and power specialist Silverstone has finally launched a fan-less small form factor power-supply it had on show at Computex 2017, almost a year ago. Part of its NightJar Series, the new Silverstone Nightjar NJ450-SXL is claimed to be "the first ever fanless SFX-L design". As you might guess from the name, this is a 450W PSU, and it relies upon finned aluminium construction to cool its components.

Due to the passive cooling, the form factor is SFX-L at an extra long size with the dimensions of 130 mm (W) x 63.5 mm (H) x 125 mm (D)

Stats:

Quote
  • Fan-less thermal solution, 0 dBA acoustics
  • SFX-L form factor for use in small form factor computers
  • High efficiency with 80 PLUS Platinum level of efficiency
  • 100% modular short cables with flexible flat arrays
  • 24/7 continuous power output with 40°C operating temperature
  • Class-leading single +12V rail
  • PCI-E 8pin and PCI-E 6pin connectors support
  • Measures 130 mm (W) x 63.5 mm (H) x 125 mm (D) and weighs 1.52kg.

I gotta say, Silverstone is really pushing the SFX form factor, and I love it. The stated 24/7 runtime at 40c environment seems too good to be true. I would love for @LinusTechto test this one out.

My opinion

I love small form factors. My next PC will definitely be an ITX based computer, probably based on @dondan 's C4 case:

I wonder if airflow will be enough for this PSU, and if the length will be an issue. Either way, great to see Silverstone be this active in the SFX market. Definitely worth a view.

I'm super excited to get some reviews for this. I have a corsair SF600 which has the fan turning on and off pretty consistently at idle which is driving me nuts. I'm a little concerned about it being in a case with little to no airflow though. Hopefully the price won't destroy my wallet too badly.

My concerns exactly. I am looking at the SF600 for my build as well, but I don't want it to be noisy (why I'm going for a 600w instead of 450w, which is more than enough.

Don't get the SF600. I have it. It's silent when idle but as soon as you game on it the fan turns on and becomes a loud obnoxious piece of garbage that won't turn off when you return back to idle power, not even after a restart. You have to turn it off, let it cool down and then turn the PC back on again for it to remain silent.

Also, the cables are stiff as wood. In cramped ITX cases you want some flex in your cables since you're space constrained in a small case, the SF600 cables don't want to flex at all.

My RM650 has the same cables. But what I love about Corsair is that they have really high end sleeved cables. You can buy a complete kit for the Sf600 for very little. They are not bad cables. It's much more difficult to get sleeved cables for Silverstone :(

But that means extra expense when the cables shouldn't be crap in the first place. SilverStone's cables are more flexible to begin with saving the extra cost.

Indeed. The sleeved cables should be included at the price tbh. But most cables included are ugly and poor quality for most psu's. But man, if this thing can wotk in a Dancase C4, it might be a legit alternative.

Wait, what? Why would you pick the noisier version if you don't want the PC to be noisy? The SF600 is considerably noisier than the SF450 at the same loads.

Please don't tell me it's because of the silly higher wattage equals silent myth?

Anyway, the NJ450 does look interesting. I'm not entirely convinced by the cooling, though. At 89% efficiency at 450W, that's nearly 60W of heat. There are some passive 75W 1050 Tis, though.

Strange. But at 400w use they are both at 45 dba, so it's quite similar, although the fan is much faster on the 600w?!?! The 600w does seem to have a more aggressive curve. The reasoning for me is that a PSU runs most efficient at ~50%. So if my PC uses 3-400w, a 600w PSU would be better than a 450w. But this just seems odd.

Meh, drill a hole through your psu like i did and hook your own fan up to the fan hub. Easy control and no worry anymore about noisy PSU fan

I think the extra length will be an issue for some cases, (the extreme mitx) but it should be fine for like the Node 202. Cooling is another thing alltogether

Now we only need to passively cool the 2400g on a really tiny ITX form factor and we're golden.
