Why do people care so much about the UK Royal Wedding?

Stix67

Why do people support them so much? The royals are mostly born into wealth and fame, they haven't worked for it. They probably don't have an easy life being unable to do "normal" things but I can almost guarantee it's far easier and nicer than almost everyone else. They basically do whatever they want. You could argue they raise money through tourism and for charity, but they don't actually do anything to do that other than show their faces occasionally so why do people line the streets cheering at them and headline after headline talks about it. I don't get it.

And it's sad that in the UK news, the wedding takes top spot while the Cuba plane crash comes second.

Because a ginger has finally done it.

It's easily the greatest human achievement of all time.

Our Grace. The Feathered One. He shows us the way. His bob is majestic and shows us the path. Follow unto his guidance and His example. He knows the one true path. Our Saviour. Our Grace. Our Father Birb has taught us with His humble heart and gentle wing the way of the bob. Let us show Him our reverence and follow in His example. The True Path of the Feathered One. ~ Dimboble-dubabob III

the british are crazy about their royalties and now someone form the colonies USA get's taken into it the murices paparazzi also eat their fair share of it, basically the two countries that idolize famous people the most made a mash up.

they are mere political tools so to speak, they attract some tourism and are basically the highest ranking diplomats of a country. Outside that depending on the country they still sign laws, meaning if the king/queen refuses to sign something(although there ways to circumvent that) it already shows there are flaws in it.

May the light have your back and your ISO low.

It's like why people still care about the Kardashians and Kanye West. From my perspective, both have virtually zero talent, yet people buy it up.

Seems I'm not the only one then that hates this kinda crap. I still wonder what it actually is that drives these people to idolise "celebs". Do they feel more important if they go around supporting and talking about someone they think is more popular than them? An attempt to assume the identity by copying and gossiping as much as possible so all their friends think they are just as good or important perhaps.

Lots of different reasons, for different people.

Mostly it’s a “spectacle” - a lifetime event few people get to witness - especially often.

The royal family also acts as the moral and emotional beacon to guide the commonwealth. Whether you think they do a good job is another question.

And mostly because when the old true monarchs gave up power, they negotiated this lifestyle in exchange for a democracy.

Fun fact, UK citizens enjoy an extra $300+ Million GBP per year because of the royal family. And that’s *after* paying the royal family their “salary”.

But the short answer is that they are as close as we get to fairy tales in real life, and people enjoy the fancy events and costumes and delight it brings. It’s entertainment, if nothing else.

If you're not British, you probably don't get it. Why does anyone care about anything? Why do people follow celebrities like crazy?
Or, more importantly, why do people follow celebrities more than scientists and scholars, who actually know what they're talking about?

I don't see a problem with it. I'm sure they do more than we give them credit for (which isn't hard looking at this lot).

As for the plane crash, while that's indeed saddening, it's more of a Cuban issue. It's like asking why the UK wouldn't choose to put the school shooting that happened on Friday on their headlines; it's not a priority for that nation.

Not the right place to make a thread like this really, the LTT user base is probably on the "I don't care about it" side of things as we're not all that much about oldschool society norms.

People find it really easy to bang on about how much they hate stuff or how evil and pointless something is, but 9 times out of 10 this is just reflective of that persons understanding.

I don't care about the royal wedding, but the royal family and having a king/queen is actually a very important thing even though they will never use their power.   Having a figure head that can overrule in a time of political crisis stops a political crisis.  Having a  figure head that can't overrule without it being the end of their head stops them becoming overlords.   It's like mad theory for governmental control.  :/

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

Perhaps - but LTT is very diverse. And many of us are part of the Commonwealth, so Henry and Harry are heirs to our head of state.

Indeed, it's a circular form of "nothing happens", and that's by design.

The Queen and the other monarchs know that the UK people (and government) tolerate them because they don't interfere. Even though they still have some legal powers to step in.

But, let's say a Nuclear Bomb went off in London, and killed the Prime Minister and senior government officials? The Queen (or more likely, Charles, since he acts on her behalf most of the time these days due to her age and health) could step in and make decisions, and help a new government be formed and setup.

Or, a government gets elected that starts doing things truly illegal and/or corrupt - same deal. The Prime Minister forms a government with the blessing of the monarch. Take that blessing away, and a new government must form.

If you mean as an American? I think it's more a morbid fascination with them. I don't think most Americans would want a Monarchy back.

What I really don't get is the fascination people in the SSA (Squabbling States of America) have with it. We have our own Royalty: King Trump, Prince Pence, Lord McConnel, High Sheriff Sessions, pretty much anyone who is obscenely rich, etc.

While there are a lot of people here that really care about Royals and the wedding, there is also a LOT of people here that dont. I guess its hard to describe to people that dont have a monarchy, but essentially our entire history is based around the royal family and monarchy. Throughout school we are taught history and what influence different monarchs have had on the world, its something you grow up with. Inherently you are involved even if you dont particularly like the royals, for example I have no views either way on the royals, they have nothing to do with me, and they have no influence over my life, but even today Iv'e probably read 2-3 articles on various things to do with the wedding, whether it be the crowds in London, the church, whatever, Im not particularly interested in the wedding, but its something which is effecting the entire country. Our media understands this and so hypes the event up even more as they know it will do well. I guess what im trying to say is that our media portrays this as a huge event (because they know that it will do well) this means that it effectively will always be a huge event (because the media promote it so much) and subsequently a large proportion of the population are dragged into reading or seeing things on tv which they probably wouldnt otherwise. One final note, there is also a significant amount of people that dispise the royal family and what they stand for (and in some respects I agree with them) and the other hand there is probably a similar amount of people that adore them (again I can see why in some respects) but most of us dont really care either way, and just get dragged along for the ride. :)

Frankly, I'm sick about hearing about it. It's been dominating the News on TV and regular programming is being bumped for it. The darned thing is over and it's still going to be shown tonight in place of the one show worth watching tonight. >:(

Its not only big news in the UK, that news is big across the pond in the US. But for us US folks its something happy for once, instead of the murder and death we normally see on the news.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
