More Cores Or Faster Cores

For what sort of tasks is it better to have higher clock speeds and what tasks need more cores? If you had a choice of 4 cores @ 4GHZ or 8 cores @ 2GHZ which would be better for what?

What is actually supposed to go here? Some people put their specs, others put random comments or remarks about themselves or others, and there are a few who put cryptic statements.

8 cores@2.0 would be better for pretty much anything other than gaming, but 4 cores @4.0 would be way better at gaming

Because for the hypothetical question to work the number of cores times the number of GHz per core has to equal 16.

No it wouldn't be better at anything. If the cores had the same IPC then the 8 core would be at most equal. And as bad as half as fast. Depending on task.
