Porn Pass (age verification in the UK)

mr moose

It appears the UK is at it again with it's fight against underage porn access.  Although this time it is not as stupid as the last couple of attempts.  Instead of outright blocking or asking ISP's to verify age etc, individuals can buy a pass from their local newsagent which contains a key code that will verify their age for online content.  Which is great because it means you don't have to put any private details online in order to verify age.

The legislation is designed, in part, to stop children accessing online pornography and one method of age verification being proposed by lawmakers is buying special a “porn pass” at corner stores with an identification card like a passport or drivers license.

Which I think is great, as a parent who grapples with allowing their kids to have freedom on the internet and protect them at the same time without looking over their shoulder.   I have tried out of the box tools (word and url whitelist/blacklists on the router), however these are very hit and miss,  they can block legitimate sites as well as they sometimes contain randomly letters in the page name/url that randomly create blocked words.

Quote

The UK government has said that industry will be responsible to create the verification software, with platforms such as MindGeek’s AgeID cited as one way to verify a user’s age.

Typical of them at the moment, create a law and make the industry (and by extension the user) pay for it, because it appears you have to pay for the pass in the first place as well.  Not so happy about this, however their could be benefits to the wider community  depending on how easy/hard it is to bypass and how much it effects the industry.

Quote

While selling porn passes at local newsagents is just one potential idea, many have reacted poorly to the proposal saying they would feel too embarrassed to buy one at their local store.

I agree, although it could be used for gambling, dating websites and the online purchase of alcohol.  So it's not like you have to admit using it for porn.

Personally, I like the idea of a verification process that takes all the privacy concerns away and means you don't have to put CC details online, but like everything there will be a catches that many won't like (like having to pay for something you shouldn't).   I think if the government covers the cost of this then why would anyone have an issue?

EDIT, forgot to mention that back in my day if you wanted porn you had to front up to the newsagent or video store anyway, so it doesn't really effect me, I am not afraid to admit I like porn.

No, someone will release a key generator or something.   Maybe they'll even get sold in school playgrounds by tech savvy teens (like smokes used to in my day).

Well at least the VPN industry will profit from this hell its probably cheaper than the license more convenient to boot, this law is essentially a giant advert for VPNs xD

I don't see how this would help that much. It would be up to the website to tell you that it has adult content and if the UK government decided to handle that you would just get the same issue and be giving the Parliament a lot of power in way of censorship if they could just think that something might be explicit.

I would argue that kids old enough to work out how to setup a VPN or bypass this sort of system are already old enough to view the content.

As I said, paying for it is stupid, but if walking into a store and presenting your drivers license in exchange for a code to use online that are in no way linkedd is an issue I suggest you might have bigger problems

There is no censorship here, for a change they are not blocking access to anything, they have just found a way to help prevent underage content being viewed by underage people.

No they aren't.  Making you pay yes, I already disagree with that, but they aren't telling you what you can and can;t look at.  It's not like child porn filters and interpol.

For the 3rd time, the government isn't telling you what you can and can't view online.  If your a child your already not supposed to be allowed to view it, so your issue isn't with this but with age old laws about age ratings that are based on fairly decent evidence.

What if I told you trying to combat the serious effects of porn was not worth tax payer time and or money? So what if a preteen watched a lewd video? This kind of stuff will never get support from the younger generations btw since they are all used to just viewing the content.

Could easily end up like the War on Drugs in the U.S. The government getting too high on what it thinks is best.
