Can Amazon replace high-costing monitors without return?

I've recently had many items that have been a one time exception that allowed me to keep the item and either get a refund or a replacement as long as it was in the warranty. Is it possible for them to apply this for items costing £100? Most of my items were 5-25£

My guess is that they look at your history and decide how trustworthy you are based on that. Have you spent thousands of dollars over the years, without any complaints, and now you're having an issue with one product? Chances are you are trustworthy and gets some nicer treatment (which may include not needing to send the stuff back).

Are you someone who has made warranty claims several times on a handful of orders, or exhibit other suspicions behavior like claiming warranty for more and more expensive products? They might demand proof that it is broken and it was not you who damaged it. If you get caught, you might be charged with fraud.

 

 

The only similar instance I am aware of would be this case. Someone reported issues with a non-existing firewall in order to get the manufacture to send him a new one. He had to pay 50,000 dollars in bail.

To clarify, the reason why this occurs in some circumstances is that it costs them more to pay for return shipping than to send a new one. I encountered this with office furniture working at staples. If you got the protection plan from squaretrade and even a scratch appeared you would get your staples gift card to go buy a new one with and you could keep the old one, since it would cost them a lot to have you mail the desk or chair back, and they wouldn't even do anything with it when they got it since it's damaged. It just wasn't worth it. This depends on the company and the item though, and abusing warranty terms is a good way to get in trouble with a company and i'm sure could technically be termed as insurance fraud or something similar

Yes, retailers like Amazon can simply replace items without requiring a return. However, the more expensive the product is, the less likely that will become. Plus, if such an expensive item has a defect, they might sometimes want to return it to the quality control departement of the manufacturer. (Future product design improvements are often based on customer complaints or returned defective products.)

Let's be clear, the chances of Amazon simply saying "Hey go ahead and keep that defective $100 monitor, and we'll send you a new one" is basically zero. It's not actually zero, but it's so close as to make no practical difference.

 

@DrThots, what is the actual problem with the monitor? You should contact Amazon, and request that they provide you with a "Return Shipment" shipping label, so you can send the defective one back.

 

You could also request an "Advanced Exchange", which is a fancy term for them sending you the replacement first, and then you send them the defective one in the replacement's box. Keep in mind, they usually require a credit card deposit to protect against fraud.

I have been an Amazon Prime customer for 7 years. I've always had to return a defective item. Now granted I've been refunded or an exchange has been shipped out right after I've created the RMA and printed the return label. But I have never gotten to (nor would I want to) keep a defective item.

 

All that said you think Amazon doesn't keep track of everything you buy, return, look at, click on, etc? I've heard of people having a completely different customer service experience with Amazon. I didn't ask their shopping history but it wouldn't surprise me if it had an affect on customer service experience.

Amazon isn't as big as it is by being stupid. Most things of considerate value are asked in return. Only stuff with less value than the shipping itself is usually left to the client. Also, why you want to do this. It's not just unethical but wrong. You should not even consider this as an option, you should simply do as hey suggest you to do, if they say keep it, well it's cool but if not why would you argue or be let down. They are giving you the item you payed for.

Fraud is criminal, and is a large part of the reason why we pay more and more for our goods.

Think before you commit fraud for something as petty as a 100 pound monitor.

I've gotten numerous items for free, including a $100 beard trimmer. Forgot to ship it out within the time frame of the return label, they said don't worry about it just keep it. The rest were soaps etc that broke apart during shipping.

if it's a first party amazon fulfilled item, chance are it has to do with the calculated wroth of your account more than anything. I often do not have to return things, have been sent replacements before sending back, or have had used things taken back no questions asked because I have spent, and continue to spend a lot on amazon. It's worth it to them. So your account worth and the percentage of thing you return (with relation to value) is important

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it. 

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff. 

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Just adding to what other say, not aimed directly on Amazon, but some cases where the product in question isn't sold anymore, they can simply ask you to destroy the product in a non home fixable way and send pictures of it with a code included in the picture. (Written. On paper) to get a new product sent. I had to do that with one product that stopped working.
