S/PDIF Out Header (2 pins) >> Optical

tridy

Hi.

I have a S/PDIF Out header on my motherboard and I have Edifier speakers that have Optical In.

Is it something that I could benefit from? If so, how do I about connecting them?

Thanks!

All you should need is an optical cables like the onle I have linked below. Optical is usually my preferred connection since you don't need any drivers compared to when you use USB.

I have the optical cable, similar to the one you are mentioning.

The problem is that all I have is 2 jumper pins on the motherboard, so I have to translate that into optical somehow.

I did a bit of the research and found the list of the accessories for gigabyte motherboards

https://www.gigabyte.com/uk/Support/Accessory/Motherboard

it looks that the one I need is: 12CR1-1SPOUT-03R (3 pin SPDIF OUT(RCA) cable)

one on aliexpress

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Gigabyte-SPDIF-OUT-Fiber-Expansion-Daughter-Card-Fiber-Coaxial-digital-audio-output-tailgate12CR1-1SPOUT-12/945401946.html

it will require a separate 5v connector from the motherboard, like in this positing:

https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=142492

not really plug and play but I have a plan now and at least it is possible.

@kmathieu2220 ... do you think @tridy will have to mess around with the motherboard’s BIOS?

I’m curious to see whether the board will recognize the addition... or with the BIOS need to be updated...

@tridy , let the forum know your results, eh.

I have the Digital Output in the Device Manager, so I think that the signal is already there and it is a matter of wiring. Why do you think I will need to mess around BIOS?

I will let the forum know about the progress.

In your “audio inputs and outputs”, does the REALTEK DIGITAL OUTPUT (2-REALTEK HIGH DEFINITION AUDIO) match up with that adapter you installed? If so, I guess all is recoginized.

I’m NOT a PC-tweaker, so get a 2nd opinion, eh. :$

As far as I can see, "Realtek Digital Output" is this 2 pin connector on the motherboard and is not used at the moment.

I will be ordering the mentioned adapter to translate that into optical output.

I will let you know how it goes when I receive and install it.

  • 1 month later...

Alright, I have got the accessory from eBay, and as it was described in the earlier posting, I had to split the 3 wires into 2 and 1. 2 went to the SPIF on the motherboard and 1 to the 5V from the free USB header on the motherboard. And it seems to be working. I have got optical signal for my speakers. Mission accomplished.

I have aGA A320M-H mother board and have installed a part to give me optical sound

attachment showing this part

it uses 3 wires the plug i cut into 2 as the voltage was to go to the 5 v rail on the usb output plug

the problem is no sound  from the digital driver

im trying to use obs the pictures fine but it cant get sound

there apears no was to switch the drive to spdif out see number 2 photo

4 shows the capture card installed  and this showes in obs as working

i think its all tied to setting up the driver correctlt

i have installed so many without any differences

finaly got one to show the speaker managment system  and that showes the digial sound somehow connected to the analog speaker 5

I hope someone can assist me in getting digtal sound rather fast as i have some movie to process

From what I remember, on my motherboard it did not matter if I was connecting anything to the pins or not. It was sending the digital signal to the pins and then it did not care if I transferred it further to the optical or not. It showed up for me in the device manager all the time from the very beginning, even before connected the pins.

Do you have the light coming out of the optical when you connect it? I do not think I used Realtek's audio manager at all, but I did use Audio Switcher (https://www.audioswit.ch/er) to set the active device to "Digital Output". So, if you have got the light coming out of the card and optical cable then you can investigate further. Probably obvious but the receiver of the optical signal (speakers in my case) had to be setup to optical and not analog or bt.
