A GTX 1080 now or wait for new cards ?

so now im about to build my first gaming pc 
and i choose those parts
ryzen 2700x 
asus strix x470-f 
trident z 2x8 3200mhz 
asus Gtx 1080 strix

and my question is : should i wait for the new cards or ? i will be gaming at only 1080p 75hz

Wait for new cards. If only because either something as good will be released for cheaper or stores will throw the 1080 on sale to get rid of it.

totally agree with this, the new cards will be the only ones compatible with Nvidia RTX ray tracing tech, it wont work with any current gen consumer card (not sure on Titan V)

why? The new cards will release in July (ish) you need to wait, the 1180 will release at a similar MRSP as the 1080 and will offer +50% performance

I was under the pretense that it would be the original retail of the 1080, nowhere near 500 dollars. I would just buy one now and sell it immediately when release is out. You also don't know what availability will be like so...

Actually, there is an out but it's also a gamble. Buy a GTX 1080 from EVGA and hope that the new generation comes out within 90 days and EVGA has a card available for it. You can take advantage of their Step-Up program to get a free upgrade.

I never said it was $500. It will be around what the 1080 MSRP was on release, around $650 AfaiR, I paid £569 for an aftermarket prior to the 1080ti enforced price drops. Either way, upgrading to pascal now 2 months before its end of life and the fact it wont support RTX is a massive own goal 

 

I certainly wouldn't buy a 1080 now and sell it for a new card on 11XX release, their value will plummet, if it HAS to be now, EVGA step up is a MUCH better option as @M.Yurizaki said above

Their value might plummet, but you'd still get good performance now. You might lose some money but its not going to be a worthless card

There's no one that has to upgrade now, no one. Even if you don't have a GPU, they haven't had one up until now so can do without for another 2 months. 50% performance for a little more cash is insane, that's more than an overclocked 1080ti for a lot less money - I have a 1080, SLI could be an option when the used cards flood the market, but I still wouldn't take it due to RTX thing, which a lot of people will know about

Perhaps. Just make sure not to splurge on a GPU and not have a monitor to back it up.

If you’re in no hurry, then wait. There has only been speculation so far as to when the new cards will be released so there is that to think about as well. I didn’t want to wait any longer so I just recently got a 1080, but if you’re fine waiting, then I don’t see any reason not to.

that's when theyre announced, 2 months, 3 months ... we know theyre coming, so obvious answer is to wait. Even with a 1080P monitor, OP could pick up a 1170 which going by previous trends, should offer around 1080ti performance, for around $450 .... it really is a no brainer for me

if you already have a graphics card that can hold you until new cards come out and get readily available then wait...if you need a graphics card right now because you don't have one or the one you have is too crappy then just buy a GTX 1080 right now the prices are fairly ok and it's a very good card.

I think we can assum the mining craze will kick off again with a supply of cards able to mine, it's only slowing down now because we've hit the limit of what's avalible.

 

So, I don't see a gamer getting close to a 11 series graphics card anywhere close to retail in a year. Why I just bought a 1080 while I can at MSRP, which they are right now if you look.

At 1080p 75hz you don't even need a 1080. If you want a 1080 get it now. An 1180 won't show any improvement while running your monitor.

Considering how the market is reacting I would buy a next gen GPU as fast as you can. Assuming they are good at mining though. If it's GDDR6 at 16gbs and more power efficient certain algos would love that

Given that there's Bitcoin AND Ethereum ASICs currently, GPU mining will probably die this generation.
