Rumor : Intel to show discrete GPU at CES 2019

killcomic

It's no secret that Intel has been wanting a slice of the GPU market pie, specially after hiring Mr. Raja Koduri.

According to Neowin, rumours have emerged that Intel might unveil a new discrete GPU as early as 2019.

You should take this rumour with a metric ton of salt, of course, but the prospect of a third player in the DGPU  market is very exciting indeed.

Before you get too excited though, Neowin does put things into perpective.

Quote

As of right now, there are no details as to how powerful Intel's cards will be, and it's hard to predict what segment of the market Intel might be shooting for, but if the information is accurate we should have less than one year to wait to find out.

Let’s just hope the rumour is correct and it's not just another integrated GPU.

Well this isn't their first attempt, they could have been working on one for years and brought people on in an attempt to hasten progress and pound out the kinks.

Granted this is a rumor so season to taste

They could have modified one of their accelerator cards to function as a GPU.

i just hope Intel will be able to pull out a beast of a GPU, having nVidia dominating the GPU market makes my nutsack cringe and wasting multiple money bags on GTX1080Ti is a big no-go. Come on, Intel! But I'm afraid Intel iGP's are only able to run Pacman at 720p/30

My sentiments exactly.

If they do unveil next year,  I'd be curious to know how much input Mr Koduri had in it.

The GPU market would benefit from a third player, yes, but maybe the CPU market next?  AMD is getting some stock back, but ARM and Ryzen aren't quite enough to stop Intel's dominance for now.

It's all silicon, Intel understands of silicon xd.

But seriously Intel has never quit its researchers and developments on higher performance graphics since the start of Iris Pro.

I don t believe it. Why would they want to do this now? If anytime they would have done it before ryzen when it was just intel not two competitors.

@ all amd fans pls be quiet amd was irrelevant before ryzen

IIRC this was a % of new sales chart, which means that Intel had 65% of the sales and AMD had the remaining 35% meaning they were still losing overall market share just at a lower rate.

nah I know, just posted that to show amd was not "irrelevant". Sure before ryzen launched, but saying "irrelevant" just means they never had any kind of importance/success. I am fully conscious before ryzen AMD was just losing marketshare every day/month/year, I bought a 6700K back in the day 'cause AMD had nothing good :S

edit; no need to reply, this is about intel's new gpu anyway, which won't come so soon. ;)

They re-worked their "Gen" GPUs, the iGPUs, for the Icelake & further already so they can expand them. 10nm Node being so very late means we haven't seen those updates. Intel has had this in the works for a while, it's just finally coming.

Though these are going to be Nvidia Tesla competitors, and maybe we'll see Consumer versions in 2021 or something.

Also, the codenames appear to all have "Sound" in the name. This would probably be derived from Gen 12, which I think is Arctic Sound.
