Facebook announces new dating feature and Match is getting clobbered

Welp, seems like Tinder and Match is going out of business. I think tinder will be effected the most as they rely on facebooks  platform  way too much

Facebook is launching a dating feature, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced during the keynote address at Facebook's annual F8 developer conference Tuesday.

"This is going to be for building real, long-term relationships — not just hook-ups," Zuckerberg said.

The opt-in feature will match users specifically with people they aren't already friends with. Facebook users can build a dating profile — which friends won't be able to see.

 

Shares of online dating company Match plunged as much as 20 percent on the news. Its parent company IAC dropped more than 10 percent.

The dating feature is likely to be a free service, challenging services like Match-owned Tinder which has been rolling out premium, paid features, according to Jefferies analyst Brent Thill.

"It's the first real meaningful competitor," Thill told CNBC's "Power Lunch" following the announcement. "This is a blow to the story [for Match] in the short term."

The F8 conference, often an opportunity to announce new developer tools or hardware, comes amid a broader discussion of policy and privacy for the company.

Facebook for months has been dealing with the fallout of the Cambridge Analytica data leak and questions of user privacy — a firestorm set off by reports that an app developer mishandled sensitive user information.

But Zuckerberg said during his address that the company will "keep building, even while we focus on keeping people safe."

The new dating feature links to events and groups on the larger platform, allowing users with dating profiles to connect via shared interests or commonly attended events.

"It mirrors the way people actually date, which is usually at events and institutions that they're connected to," Chief Product Officer Chris Cox said during the F8 conference.

Users can launch text-only private messages, separate from Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp.

Minority opinion here, but I think this is a good thing, and I'd rather give all my data to FB and google than give 99% of it to FB and google while giving another set of hands it as well.

I'm not sure how much this will affect Tinder. It all depends on how Facebook implements its process. Tinder is known for its swipes and hook ups, and if Facebook copies that sort of formula then Tinder may be in trouble.

 

If instead Facebook takes the more traditional dating profile approach like E harmony or OkCupid then Tinder might still have a place as specialising in more casual dating, but those other aforementioned services will take a huge hit. They can't ever compete with Facebook's user numbers, and when it comes to online dating services having a large, active user base is critical. 

Facebook with its extensive user base has the potential to completely eliminate these companies almost over night if this is the approach Facebook takes.

Right now these are going to be the companies sweating in their seats about this announcement.

I was actually thinking the same. Why bother giving your data to other dating applications (and have to pay when most of the time it's bots anyway) if facebook offers it (for free maybe)?

 

may just try it someday too, though I'm not sure how facebook plans to match you with people living nearby? seems that will be difficult in some cases. It's nice they find a match for you, but if that person is 500 kilometres away... no thanks.

You really think Facebook doesn't already know where you are at all times? 
Tinder uses location services to track you, so that will most likely be the main way they will locate nearby profiles. As a back up they will probably also have you set your town/city when you opt in to the dating service and create the profile.

Interesting. Might be a quick fad for a bit and hopefully push the likes of Tinder to do something asides from add all these features behind a paywall, especially since Facebook's only cost will be your personal information. It already sounds more appealing by trying to match by interests as opposed to just swiping.

Online dating is a huge waste of time for men and often a scam when you have to pay for those services. I have never done it and never will.
