AMD confirms the Vega 20, 2018 7nm being tested.

I was looking up any information on new radeon GPUs (like i do every day) and found this article talking about the Vega 20. The Vega 20 is for AI and machine learning. however with this leak, maybe we expect new GPUs from AMD sooner than i had hoped.

A peculiar piece of code has been spotted in a recent Linux patch that makes reference to Vega 20 by name. The new patch appears to introduce support for more than 50 new Vega specific hardware-level features that were previously absent from the Linux kernel or had only been partially implemented. This indicates that AMD could be approaching final post-silicon testing and validation of Vega 20."

 

Ive been holding out to see when new radeon pro gpus might be released.

As stated, this is a workstation/compute card. Maybe it can be used for gaming, but you wouldn't want to with the price. But it does mean AMD is getting great experience with 7nm for Ryzen 3000 and Navi GPU's next year.

If they fix the main issues with Vega (power consumption, components not being enabled) it should do well especially with the mining community.

I think if they had stock. I think gamers care more about using freesync then an extra 100W

As far as I know everything but primitive shaders are working. And primitive shaders will be done on a per app basis via developers through an API - like many other features.

Personally I don't think we can say "AMD confirms" - I think that's a bit clickbaity. AMD hasn't confirmed anything. This "leaked" through patch notes.

To clarify I meant implicit primitive shaders via the driver. It is unlikely that game vendors will implement the system as the target group currently consists of those who bought a high end card of the latest generation which is very attractive to miners - a rather small group and hence probably not financially viable.

Implicit primitive shaders have been dropped. I'm sure it's because it proved too difficult to implement and maintain. Implicit multi GPU is already dying so I imagine they didn't want to add another burden that may be more trouble than it's worth.

What love to see them release a gamer card based on 7nm Vega. Even if performance and clocks are only 15% better the power efficiency gains will be so much.

 

But I guess the yields will be so low to start out with that it makes sense to sell it in the market where they can price it really high and make some money.

The main issue I see is that Nvidia also can get "7nm" chips so they have no advantage here marketing wise (also it doesn't affect base performance clocks are the only potential gain)

If its going up against a gaming Volta?  Might not be worth it if the performance is only 15% more

 

Creating a failing halo product is worse than not creating one at all.

Depends how it's priced and which Volta card they choose to take on.

 

So AMD probably figures considering the limited quantity that they can make much more money selling at high margins as a Radeon Instinct product.

Don't have much flexibility in pricing if they have to use HBM got to understand if they go with GDDR6, that will increase die size by oh 15%. Pricing is going to be difficult to go less then what they are now.  Now with 7nm they will be able to cut down die size but the cost per wafer will go up, kinda nullifies those possible gains.

 

I think we will see 2 GPU cards coming from Vega 20 for Instinct and HPC cards.  For compute scenarios this is not an issue, for graphics work loads won't come across so well.

Yeah they may not release 7nm Vega for gaming, but just being a pipecleaner until 7nm is more ready and bridge to Navi as well.

I really love the design thoug. Why can't they make more professional looking non-pro cards as well? (Not talking about those Asus Turbo coolers n shit...)

We're not expecting PCIe 4.0 on Consumer in 2019. It might show up on Threadripper 3 and, very likely, Epyc 2 though. Same applies to Intel as well.

I think the extra bandwidth would be useful for chipset lanes but as you say I doubt it can be done without redesigning the boards. Isn't PCI-E 5 around the corner though? Like spec completion this or next year?

 

It will be interesting with Zen2 if we assume Rome has PCI-E 4 support because naturally that would mean Ryzen 3 has it too but that board design would limit it to PCI-E 3.
