what is a good gpu under 250

mike.s

for a motherboard that is compatible with core i5 and has decent frames. I am wondering because I am trying to get a good GPU under 250. I have been struggling lately with my old desktop now I am trying to build a system with a GPU. Also, the system is a core i5 6600 and 8gb single stick ram and power supply gold 650 and cooler master evo. Would my power supply handle that much wattage.

Power supply will be more than good enough for your budget. Have you considered used GPUs? I know the market isnt that great considering all the GPUs that were probably used for mining, but you can get alot more for your $ in terms of performance compared to buying new.

Computers r fun

its an amd card as well so it works with freesync monitors which are much less expensive than their g sync counterparts

Freesync and G-Sync are just a marketing thing really... I have used both plenty... it's meh... doesn't justify going off your way for it, just fast-sync or v-sync depending whether you're playing slow or fast paced games and you're good.

its more noticeable at lower refresh rates, so going from 60hz to 60hz g sync (my laptop) the smoothness difference is very noticeable; going off dave lee(the youtuber), he claims it doesn't make as much as a difference at higher refresh rates

regardless the benefit cost next to nothing for freesync while nvedia decided to make their tech a premium that companies have to buy (and sell back to you as a premium) if they want it in their product

in addition to the 580 4gb being in this price range, its a very solid card and you really can't go wrong with having an amd card, they are very solid cards (i'm sitting on a R9 390 myself)

The reason why it works better with lower refresh rates is that once the fps get ABOVE the refresh rate freesync falls back to vsync, which is fucking terrible IMO

I would advise looking for a 980 or 980ti used, or if you're okay getting mining cards, a lot of people in my area have been dumping RX 580s. Look for those, or maybe even GTX 1060GB/1070s in your area. I can't really speak about new too much since I'm not in the states, and don't know how prices are.

ts more noticeable at lower refresh rates,

That's the thing though... if your fps is low instead of "wasting money" to get freesync or g-sync you could just turn down the settings a lilttle bit so your fps increases past the point of difference, these cards we're mentioning here all can do rock solid steady 60fps on whatever game OP wants to play, with a triple buffered v-sync it pretty much turns all butter smooth just as much.

I feel the need for freesync and g-sync comes from the artificial need to get as high in-game settings as possible which is a problem nowadays, adjusting those can give you the same graphical quality but much higher performance, I always Love to share this video:

Lots of mining cards have had their bios flashed, so make sure to either re-flash or find a card with a non-flashed bios, OR to rub salt on the wound, make the guy selling it re-flash the card.

IMO, they totally should re-flash em, unless they are selling them as cards to be mined on. I would if I bothered flashing mine in the first place (too much work for me tbh. i just have my systems stable and am fine not touching me now :D )

I did just this, because rendering needless frames gets your card hot for no reason, I locked mine at 75, because locking in at 60 resulted in godawful tearing.

yeah. i limit my framerate to the max refresh rate of my monitor (165hz) in each game i play. and for when it is fluctuating between that and lower values, the difference is astounding compared to having it dip, stutter, and tear when it drops below the max when you just use vsync or nothing

yeah, free sync and g sync are suppose to help keep frames steady even when they're not so tearing isn't as noticeable

it's really subjective as to whether someone will notice the improvements but the fact that freesync is free compared to g sync would make the 580 4gb the best card at this price range since he could then get a solid inexpensive monitor with freesync and just make OP life better

Well 1050 ti is a super cut down 1060 chip, and the increase in cuda / ram just doesn't justify the jump in price from the regular 1050. Sure it could be better in vram dependent games like doom 4, but come on, you can just turn down two or three settings in those games and they will still look as good, and run way better, and I'm quoting this post because it's super relevant to this thread, as well as today, and you will still have a card that will outperform the 1050 ti in the rest of the games, 1050 ti is just a terrible value compared to 1060 3GB or regular 1050

used market Green team: gtx 970, 980 maybe,780 and 780ti, 1060 maybe. The 970 is probably the best used card you can get for under 250 imo. Red team HD 7970, r9 280, r9 280x, r9 380, r9 380x, rx 580 or 570 depends i saw some on hardwareswap reddit but keep in mind those are miners cards so ouch.

yah the mining of bitcoin and other virtual currency has messed up the cost of gpus but i don't really trust sellers and i rather pay a little more for the 100% safety and warranty on a gpu
