240hz monitor + Core i5-7400 + GTX 1050 Ti = waste of money?

TheOneAndOnlyJP

Thinking about getting a 240hz monitor, even just for SVP and general desktop usage. However, I'm not sure if my specs would handle anything with a signal of 1080p/240hz, or if it's even worth it. I've been looking at relatively cheap high refresh rate monitors for my computer just to have the all around extra smoothness.

My list:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01C05C1OK (i'm really considering this one despite being 144hz, because it has G-SYNC)

What were you planning on running with it? The obvious concern would be making sure your games/other media can reach 240fps. In something like CSGO or maybe Overwatch at lower settings it could be possible but I wouldn't expect a ton with anything else.

Coming from someone who has a 144hz monitor, I would say it's likely plenty unless you're super interested in competitive shooters, in which case you should just be spending more on your GPU in the first place.

I want to use this https://www.svp-team.com/wiki/Main_Page and have the general luxury of a smooth desktop, but it sounds like at that point I might as well just get a 144hz since I'll be able to reach those frame rates with my games.

Those sorts of methods can be okay at 60hz but even at that framerate it can look off. I haven't even tested at framerates as high as 144hz and I'd imagine 240hz would be either visually no different or just cause a hell of a headache.

Since seeing 120hz, it's very hard to go back down.

I ended up ordering the Acer GN246HL; it's the cheapest with the features I want, but it lacks a displayport, which is a shame. I hope I can use displayport to DVI, if necessary.
