It's going to go nuclear, run, run fast and you might just live.

Seriously... the reason why your light is getting hot is because it's not rated for dimming...

is it an incandescent light? if so, those are designed to get hot, because of the filament inside.

those tend to not last long as is so if you want to save money just turn it off when you're not using it.

1) Yes it's safe

2) Leaving an incandescent bulb on all the time wastes electricity.  (And in the summer it'll increase your HVAC costs)

Have you ever thought about technical drawing as a career?

Our Grace. The Feathered One. He shows us the way. His bob is majestic and shows us the path. Follow unto his guidance and His example. He knows the one true path. Our Saviour. Our Grace. Our Father Birb has taught us with His humble heart and gentle wing the way of the bob. Let us show Him our reverence and follow in His example. The True Path of the Feathered One. ~ Dimboble-dubabob III

depends if you over lamped it or not, there has been many cases of people installing a 100W bulb in what is suppose to be a 40W fixture, then the wires burn.

The wattage restriction listed on typical desk lamps are usually based on the thermal capability of the lamps reflector head, the thermal capability of the lamp socket, the thermal capability of the wire terminations or the insulation on the wire or cord supplying the lamp. The rating is a maximum value as set by UL standards, to prevent equipment failure and fire hazards.
