AMD’s second-generation Ryzen processors are now available for preorder

Well, the news is out my friends. Ryzen 2 is on, and it's now available for pre order, how exciting!!! According to The Verge

I'm glad that they're not announcing all the details just yet, I always love a surprise on release and I'm sure all those of you reading do too. Now obviously, there's going to be four second generation chips, those will be as follows (taken from The Verge):

a pair of eight-core, 16-thread Ryzen 7 models, and two six-core, 12-thread Ryzen 5 chips. Leading the pack is the $329 Ryzen 7 2700X, clocked at 3.7GHz with a boost to 4.3GHz, along with the slightly cheaper and less powerful Ryzen 7 2700, which costs $299 and is clocked at 3.2GHz (with a boost to up to 4.1GHz).

For the Ryzen 5 models, there’s the Ryzen 5 2600X, which costs $229 and runs at 3.6GHz (with a boost to 4.2GHz) and the Ryzen 5 2600, which costs $199 is clocked at 3.4GHz, which can be boosted to 3.9GHz. All four processors come with an AMD Wraith cooling unit free in the box. That’s different from last year’s models, which only included them on higher-end chips, so it’s is a nice bonus.

Great to see that the coolers are on AMD this year across ALL AMD Ryzen CPU's, I'm sure it was a bugger for those of you out there who didn't want to buy a new cooler just for socket AM4 unless you bought one of their higher end solutions. You'll also be unsurprised to know that

Now the new X470 chipset, that is VERY interesting to me. Could that be a new enthusiast chipset to overthrow the current enthusiast chipset, X370? I daresay it is and I do think that it would pair beautifully with AMD's new StoreMI feature as now, hybrids are no more when you buy AMD systems. You can have your speed and capacity together, have all that cake at once, your boot drive is now one with your storage once more! I wouldn't say I'm "hyped" per se about Ryzen 2, I've got a 1600 in my rig currently.

 

I'm interested in seeing the performance difference though.

AMD system here too, old fx 6300 rig. I was hyped about the original Ryzen but it's gonna be interesting to see if AMD can keep up the good work with Ryzen 2.

To be perfectly honest, I'm currently expecting Ryzen to continue the same way the FX series did: starting out strong, and then just making slight improvements to the architecture but not actually being better than Intel.

 

Hopefully it doesn't go that way. Ryzen is essentially what the FX series was supposed to be. The competition would be a lot fiercer and more interesting if AMD had succeeded with the FX series the way Ryzen is.

The only thing I disagree about is that FX didn't start out strong, people kinda hated the original Bulldozer chips. But other than that I agree.

That's true, even before I knew much about PCs I didn't like them. That TDP....

By the time Vishera came round most of the issues were fixed. Glad I'm on a Vishera FX 6300.

Still though, the 8000-series drew more than Intel's Extreme Edition lineup at the time IIRC.

 

(going to double check that right now, stay tuned..)

 

EDIT: It's pretty close, 5960X draws 140, 8350 draws 125.

EDIT: It's pretty close, 5960X draws 140, 8350 draws 125.

The 8100's TDP was actually lower than the 3960X, its extreme edition competitor.

Price decrease is still good and sometimes clock speeds aren't everything, there's tons of optimizations to the architecture that will have been done.

Sarcasm apart, just because of this feature, I'm tempted to replace my Taichi X370 and 1800X and get a new board/cpu. Higher clocks are a bonus too but 300mhz won't do much.

That does look pretty bland. Could be like that to fit into the almost business like theme of their website though.

Optane was always dead anyway. Everyone who kept up to date in the tech world knew it'd only be a matter of time before AMD came out with something on par or perhaps better. Shame there's no 2800X.

There's still discounted 1st generation.We still don't know if there are any architectural optimizations (and if there are, how significant are they).

When you have an architecture inferior to your competitor's and competition offers the same amount of cores, then yes, you do need higher clock speed.

I am rather irritated at this soft "unbox only" pre-releases. I wish Steve Burke wouldn't be as polite to other reviewers and fucked AMD over with a full review right now: this controlled message nonsense it's transparent and makes all tech reviewers look like paid fucking shills (That is to say, far more than usual)

Why do you want an "element of surprise" with the launch of a computer processor?

 

I mean these are expected to operate extremely reliably and securely for years, this is not the kind of product that should be a "SURPRISE!" release but rather a very well prepared and thought out deployment.

 

The only reason you'd want a "surprise" it's if you have no confidence in the product's value in and of itself. I understand this is consumer oriented but it's still not something that should be so closely guarded since there's basically less chances for the consumer to make informed decisions about their choice of platform i.e. The message today was:

 

"Oh look the shiny new CPUs! No numbers, no graphs, look at the pretty boxes, btw you can pre-rder now!"

They've released quite enough information in my opinion. No need for them to start handing out benchmarks before release. Do you see that with a new prebuilt device? Very rarely, so why do it to an individual part? Incase you haven't noticed, they gave clock speeds and cores in this article, which I would deem those to be an ESSENTIAL part in choosing a CPU. Benchmarks only account for one specific CPU out of the millions that are produced, how do we know that those stats are the same for all the other million CPU's of the same line out there?
