Q for mods (and staff at large), how are/were admins picked? How are sysadmins picked?

From what I can gather, mortis and whiskers became admins way back and (besides the hiring thread a bit back) there hasn't ever been any new ones since. As for sysadmins, mortis was a natural fit for the position, and @Blade of Grass... I'm not sure how they got it. Perhaps volunteering after becoming a mod? (To be clear, grass is not a general admin, just a sysop)
