Intel Unveils Six-Core i9 CPU for Laptops

MattMatt

Quote

"A mobile chip that runs at up to 4.8GHz and boasts a 29 percent performance gain compared to a Core i7-7820HK

Last year, Intel reset the bar for what counted as a performance desktop processor with the introduction of the Core i9. Before that, the Core i7 Extreme Edition offered the highest performance, with up to 10 cores. However, the Core i9 increased that to 18 cores and 36 threads. Now Intel is bringing Core i9 to laptops."

Looks good :)

@MattMatt

There's actually a quote feature in the text editor and you also need to add some personal input for the news story.

Wants to be called an i9 but only has 6 cores, get outta here.

Core i7.25

Heat is the key limiter here, with the 45W TDP 8950K needing to stay below 50 degrees Celsius in order to reach its highest frequencies.

So it will basically thermal throttle all the time ?

I feel like this is the case with most laptops. I'm just interested in progression and improvement in technology, you can't expect to immediately reach perfection.

No idea how manufacturers are going to cool this thing down. Why don't get a laptop with desktop CFL CPU instead.

Laptop CPU SKUs have always bothered me, giving something an i7 name because nothing else has it and it's the best they can offer seems a bit stupid. Like this i9, the participation award of CPUs.

I remember back in 2011 my college roommate bought a laptop with triple core AMD processor but it sucked on thermals. I didn’t really care about AMD until recently so I wonder if the name has number three on it.

4 heat-pipes, 4 ventilators , 2 on the back, one on each side and it should be good. No gpu, Thunderbol 3 for an eGPU and were ok.

How about an PCIe connector on the outside? The laptop is allready the size of a founders card. Also 2  eight-pin connectors

Damn... I think you've got them all figured out. The difference between i3, i5, i7 and i9 is just price.

Sounds like the Phenom II mobile range, 800 models were triple core. No idea if they were actually any good for their time.

It’s fine but at least in his laptop (Acer) it drastically throttles. Sandy Bridge was better back in the day.

There are dual core mobile i5's so it fits with their mobile numbering schemes.

Stick it in that liquid cooled laptop Asus has and it'll be fine... Butt agly at least it'll hit max frequencies.
