1.1.1.1 - Cloudflare launches a super fast public DNS resolver, with privacy at heart

DNS is the service that translates linustechtips.com, which you understand, into 104.27.140.189, which the network understands. Everything you load in your browser is addressed by name, and all of those names have to be translated into addresses before you can access the site. This translation is performed by a DNS resolver, and its performance is absolutely critical.

 

Cloudflare has announced today that they are launching a public DNS resolver, which claims (and my independent tests agree) to be the fastest out there. They are also focussing on privacy

We began talking with browser manufacturers about what they would want from a DNS resolver. One word kept coming up: privacy. Beyond just a commitment not to use browsing data to help target ads, they wanted to make sure we would wipe all transaction logs within a week. That was an easy request. In fact, we knew we could go much further. We committed to never writing the querying IP addresses to disk and wiping all logs within 24 hours.

 

Cloudflare's business has never been built around tracking users or selling advertising. We don't see personal data as an asset; we see it as a toxic asset. While we need some logging to prevent abuse and debug issues, we couldn't imagine any situation where we'd need that information longer than 24 hours. And we wanted to put our money where our mouth was, so we committed to retaining KPMG, the well-respected auditing firm, to audit our code and practices annually and publish a public report confirming we're doing what we said we would.

 

To switch to this new DNS resolver, you should set your primary and secondary DNS servers to 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 respectively. The instructions for how to do that depend on your OS, but you can find instructions for most devices at https://1.1.1.1/#setup-instructions. There isn't really any downside to doing so.

It's worth mentioning that while this is faster, switching is not likely to make any noticeable difference in browsing speed.  Taking the resolution time from ~70 ms to ~15 ms isn't going to be noticeable when loading a page can take a couple seconds.  Internet access speed, the speed of the site's servers, and your CPU (not to mention the contents of the page - the more complex, poorly made, and ad-ridden, the slower) are all going to play a much larger role.

 

So yes, you may as well switch, but don't get unrealistic expectations this will double your internet speed with one easy trick for free.

I don't know if it was the act of just swapping the DNS or if it really is that much faster but loading google results is much faster for me

It should help in websites with lots of content being loaded from elsewhere, namely ads.

Cool I switched my router from Google dns to 1.1.1.1

Pretty darn fast, and as measured by DNSBench, cached results are equal with my ISP (10ms) however uncached and dotcom queries are significantly slower (61 ms vs 53ms and 73ms vs 24ms respectively). I think I'll wait and see whether CloudFlare actually offers better privacy.

 

Both still thrash Google (8.8.8.8) though (23ms, 84ms, 71ms)

Usually I choose OpenDNS to solve my ISP woes like getting NXDOMAIN errors in Chrome and usually does the trick. I’m trying this one from Cloudflare now though I don’t think those few milliseconds would be that different.

It's with milliseconds that you make up seconds!
