FAKE cheap "GTX 970" from China and other scams!

A few months ago, I bought a bargain-priced "GTX 970" for $40 because I wanted to try my hand at Ethereum mining. Here's a video (click me plz) with the particular card I ordered. So after purchase, I noticed several things not unlike the awesome guy in the video:

  1. The card has a VGA output. The GTX 970 does not support VGA.
  2. The card cost $40.
  3. The heatsink is far too small for a 120-watt TDP.
  4. It has 1 GB of GDDR5. A normal GTX 970 comes with four times that.
  5. When I took the heatsink and fan off, the chip reads "GF116". That means it's from the Fermi architecture, and it's a mid-range chip...

So, to the point then: Tell me about some scams you may have encountered or fell for, and what are your thoughts on this knockoff?

Also, you can help me by searching up GTX 970 on Ebay, turning the filter to low to high price, and pouring fire into the reviews section.

I have no idea what I'm doing and no one can stop me.

I'm never buying like that again. The price should have been a dead giveaway. Ever been scammed before?

What kind of person would sell a 970 for $40? The chip ALONE should cost about that much to make.

A GTS 450 is worse than the other two. The GTX 750 or GTX 750 TI is the best value. Also please give me reputation by marking this as informative or something in the bottom right hand corner of this post because

lol

Mmhmm. Different scenario for me that taught a deeper lesson.

Generally though, no one on the internet is doing you any favors. Strangers have no interest in YOU profiting.

This is a common practice on ebay.  You can easily spot them by the lower price, tacky looking cooler with no recognizable company branding on it (ASUS, EVGA, MSI, etc.), and the presence of a VGA or other inappropriate ports.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

Exactly. So do you have any details on the scam? The Asian robot within me hungers for knowledge.

I assume you also evoked the ebay buyer protection and got a refund or something too?  That is of course an option since the card was not what was advertised.

Sometimes they let you keep the card

Also you should not be expected to pay return shipping if it was a scam item lol

they're not the same GPU as the 650ti, they seem more like 550tis IIRC.

They are. The chip is GF116; the "F" in the name signifies the Fermi architecture, or the Geforce 500 series.
