i7-7700K or i7-8700 for my pc build?

Hello! I need help picking what cpu I should get.

I have the extra money to spend on a i7-8700 but will it be better that the i7-7700k?

And yes, i do also have the money to go for the compatible motherboard for the i7-8700, but i do not have the extra money to go for the unlocked multiplier processor...

My pc build is going to consist of:

i7-7700k with msi z270/ i7-8700 with msi z370

cpu cooler, h110i v2

gpu, Zotac 1080 ti

Memory, 16 gb 3200 mhz

240 gb ssd

1 tb sshd

Phanteks p400s

650 w

When it comes to multi-threaded stuff the 8700 will win hands down. Stock vs stock the 8700 will be on par with the 7700k in gaming.... however once you toss in overclocking the 7700k will do better in games. Now if you were comparing the 7700k to the 8700k it would be a no-brainer,

Get the 8700. It's way more powerful than 7700K. Also, kaby lake is a dead-end platform, that is no longer supported, while Z370 motherboards may be compatible with new cpu's in the future.

id be looking for a way to stretch to the 8700k, that AIO is looking like the culprit for now until you have future funds

I would have suggested going with lower speed ram personally. This isn't Ryzen, ram speed isn't as important on the intel platform.

Also @Konrad Kwasniewski. The 8700 at stock vs stock is better at gaming, but once you throw an overclock on the 7700k you will see higher FPS in games with that GPU.

Also you lose the ability to have MCE on the 8700... meaning the more cores in use the lower and lower the turbo will be. So 1-2 cores you can boost to 4.6ghz.. 3-4 cores it will drop to 4.2-4.3.  Use 5+ cores and it can drop into the 3.9ghz area.

That doesn't happen on K sku's which can stay at max turbo on all cores at all times. So from a multi-thread perspective then the 8700 is better, but when it comes to purely gaming and getting the best fps numbers... then the 7700k is better.

you can get 3200mhz for $180, its only $20 more than 2400mhz, and it some titles there is performance to be had (not much but all the same). Also by dropping the AIO now OP isn't compromising performance in the long run, he/she can just add it in later, where as replacing that ram is a resale and buy job

The thing is that the cooling is really needed on the 8700k. They run hot, and the more cooling you can throw at them the better results you will have.

Hey! What is the computer for? Your use case will determine whether you want the additional cores.

On a vacuum I'd say go 8700.

But also, if you're not overclocking, don't bother paying $120 for a liquid cooler, it's useless on a locked CPU.

That should give you the room for a 8700K, then buy a $30 air cooler like the Cryorig H7, and you can even overclock it a little bit. That's my recommendation ultimately

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

But OP can add an air cooler for the meantime without too much affect to performance whilst keeping the faster ram
