Stephen Hawking died today at 76 years of age

Just saw this. I am crushed. Never knew him or followed his work, just one of those inspirational people of our time that has become and will be a household name.

I'm actually baffled. I never use that word. It's just so strange. Not only was he a prominent figure in society, for one reason or another, he wasn't even supposed to live to as old as he did. I've never been shocked like this, and quite frankly I don't know why I am. I never knew him, I barely followed him, but for some reason, I'm still surprised. Maybe just because it happened so suddenly. I'm sure it will feel the same way when Stan Lee passes.

Not sure, I never met him, never really followed him, but he was just one of those inspirational people everyone knew, like Elon Musk. But he did really make a name for himself, he will not be forgotten.

When I was young, I admired Stephen Hawking as not just a scientist but a person of inspiration. Rest in peace, Stephen Hawking and may the stars shine upon your soul forever and ever. I solemnly send out my condolences to his children (that are now adults anyways) and his family.

Just because you have the right to your freedoms doesn't mean you can violate someone's liberties or the law!

I'm choosing to be happy about it, because he accomplished so much while facing incredible adversity.

 

For those wondering about his achievements: he's best known for important theories about black holes, including the concepts of singularities and Hawking radiation (that is, the radiation black holes emit due to quantum effects near the event horizon).  He was also the first to advance a more unified theory of the universe that melded relativity and quantum physics.

 

Basically, a significant chunk of our current understanding of the universe is owed to him.

Not only did he do all that, but he did that with MND and lived to be 76 when it should have been a miracle to live to 30. A great man
