What's the general opinion on Alienware

Hello! I am interested in what the community's general opinion on Alienware is? And here are the specific aspects I am thinking of:

  1. Do people have issues with their customer service or quality control?
  2. In general do they make good products that have competitive features, specs and engineering put into them?
  3. Are they overpriced?
  4. Are they better at certain products than others?
  5. Have there been phases in their existance when they delivered a really good or bad line-up of products compared to other years?
  6. Did their reputation, products and business change when Dell bought them? If so how and was it positive or negative?

It's a lot of questions that I don't expect many people to answer but I'm interested in how they are viewed. Sorry if it's in the wrong subforum. Thanks!

You'll probably pay 2-4x what a computer is worth when you buy Alienware as opposed to less than 2x with other manufacturers. That's all anyone needs to know. All of the other questions tie into that.

1. Dell owns Alienware so customer service is great

2. Build quailty and gamer appeal

3. Yeah a tad 

4. Some laptops they have are decent and so are their new monitors

5. They used to be extremely overpriced before Dell bought them. Now they are just sorta overpriced

there was one guy that I knew personally who had bought one for like 3 or 4k and figured out real quick how fast it depreciated

this was at a time when I would have gladly built a pc for him but he chose to buy this alienware and basically suffered for it.

Considering they're owned by Dell, and I'm basing this off my experience with Dell's other products, they should be fine. The only time I had to ping customer service was six years ago to get a laptop display replaced and it was pretty smooth sailing

Some of their designs are novel, but whether or not they're good or useful is up to you.

Building it yourself aside, they are priced higher for the same specs with regards to other gaming OEMs like CyberPower PC. But otherwise they're on par with boutique brands like HP OMEN, Falcon Northwest, and the like.

I don't recall anything they did that was outright terrible, but nothing that was a must have.

I think their reputation went down, because at the time Dell was seen as a mediocre to "eh" computer company. I think Dell turned around after they went private again but people still hold a grudge for some reason.

Their new laptops are pretty reasonably priced IMO, but their desktops are not.  My 15 R3 (bought for $2k at the time but now you can get a very similar config for <$1500) has the 99Whr battery, which was CRUCIAL in my choice of gaming laptop.  I get 8 hours of battery with all of the battery saving settings on.   They have best in class battery life for the 15", which was really the only reason I got an Alienware. If it wasn't going to leave my desk, I would have gotten something faster.

 

1) Customer service is great. I have the top of the line warranty and when I sent it in to get a popping noise in the hinge resolved, they over-nighted it to their facility and back. They'll even send someone to your house or give you a replacement if need be. I heard that you can have a repair technician sent to your home for a repaste, and you can have them use something other than Dell's toothpaste, but YMMV.

 

2) Definitely. Some of my friends have Asus gaming machines and they just feel cheaper overall to use compared to my Alienware. Alienware spends millions on R&D just for their machines, and it shows for the most part. Their heatsink design was idiotic, but they've remedied that from what I've heard.

 

3) IMO No. They've dropped the prices on their laptops significantly. I payed $2,000 for my 6700HQ-1060 6Gb laptop back when they first came out in October of 2016, which in hindsight was way too much, but they were the only ones offering good battery life in a gaming laptop. Their desktops are most definitely overpriced though, even when compared to other companies like Asus or CyberPower.

 

4) They're definitely better at laptops and monitors than desktops.

 

5) Yeah. Every company has. Their Alienware Alpha SFF desktops are STUPIDLY overpriced. You pay $699 for an i3 and 960 4Gb machine.

 

6) Yeah. When Alienware was first starting to become popular, they basically sold modified Clevo laptops.  I would say that their lineup and overall experience has improved tenfold now that Dell owns Alienware.

they look alien but other than that, nothing distinguish them from all other manufacturers and brands. I guess it appeals to gamer who desire exotic styles and looks.

  1. my friend had a laptop he overpaid for brand new, turned out the rgb messed up pretty bad and the pc wouldn't launch right, had to get it repaired
  2. do they make good products? i suppose.. but not competitive at all, for the price being paid you could find something killer.

  5. based on opinion and intent research of specs for all their lineups wh ich im not trying to do.. all the pc's/laptops ive seen from them arent worth it.
  6. in my opinion, it affected them positively , giving them a maybe better name since dell is a large company , and maybe spreading word of them.

1. The quality is mediocre from what I've seen, though I also haven't had much contact with Alienware products in a few years. (A friend had an Alienware laptop)

  1. gpu died (R9 M290 or something)
  2. replacement gpu died again 
  3. they forgot the thermal paste on the second replacement , killing it in a matter of hours 
  4. replaced the gpu w/ the wrong model and caused huge performance drop
  5. keyboard died 

after the 5th time he simply asked for a refund , all the RMA's took place in a 6 month timespan after buying it

yup. and the guy who repaired my friends couldnt even fix the rgb, he got so pissed off at it, he refused to try and fixed it and refunded him partially
