no yet, let me get a real GPU that actually does things and then yeah, I still don't have my passkey bonus (cause of failed WUs) and I'm averaging like 50K PPD, and don't even have a million points. Thanks for the offer but I want to be contributing in a way that is genuinely useful before everyone starts congratulating me.

I hit 700W on an i5 with a NHD15

Also I'm 14 so please just confirm anything I say with someone more experienced

the point of folding is to have a large number of low power users, rather than wanting a small number of lare players

So, I can only speculate. But folding has been around for a long time, and over the years has ran not only on PCs, but also PS3s and even android at one point. So some of this is a hold over from the old way and some, which is my speculation, that if you have a larger number of users, losing one user has a much smaller effect.

There are some users that come and go who make enough points to rival even some of the higher up teams as a whole. These users are often short lived and my thinkin is they are companies IT department testing new data-centres and HPC installs.

If you have 100 users, losing 5 users is 5%, if you have 1000 users losing 5 users is half a percent. ect, ect.

Yep, I seen quite a few big ones come and go.

Though...I sure do miss the old multiple forum F@H event (Chimp Challenge) to this day.  Sad noises.  What is nuts, that back when it was not GPUs that where the king but folks using server P2 setups to output the most points.  Fun times.  Along with a bit of dead hardware too.  xD

guys, we have 18 hours before the first GPU event starts on the BOINC pent, heres a guide to get set up.

We are number 3 in the world for folding, if we throw even half of that at BOINC I'm sure we would make a splash

We don't currently have any Folding@home competitions running, but the competition Linus was talking about is the BOINC Pentathlon.

NV will win in folding significantly (3090 in the 7mil range and 7900xt in the 4 mil range, according to the LAR DB).  The 7900xt (and even XTX) will use a lot less wattage (100+ watts less at stock for both when flat out).  The 7900XT will give more performance in most games than the 3090 (even the 3090Ti), especially if running less than 4k resolution.  If you want RTX, NV still wins, but barely...you'd be better served waiting to get a 40 series card if RTX is a big factor in your decision, and that would more efficiently crank out even more F@H PPD then.

what would you get in my position? a 4070 ti is also on the table

WIthout caring about RTX, the 4070 TI sucks compared to the 7900XT in gaming, and even if you cared about RTX, the 3090 would still beat it.  So, I'd go with the 7900XT if you care about gaming performance more, and the 3090 if you care about PPD more.

The lower the resolution, the more advantage the 7900XT has over the 3090.

I feel that the 3090 will just take anything I throw at it in this resolution. But also the 7900xt might get better with driver updates like the 6000 series did. I think I might just get the 7900 xt(x)

I'm actually pretty impressed how many PPD that I am still generating in F@H even with a good chunk of my resources going to the BOINC Event.  It will be interesting to see how the Folding Summer Sprint goes.

Not much of a Gamer….. But I have thing about F@H that may be a little over the top.   See my builds here
