Linus talked about having someone on the social team "to engage with the initiatives that have been left alone by us", he brings up the folding team as an example.

The Social Team would be nice for helping with awareness for engagement of new and part-time folders though shout-outs and prizes for competitions.

I'd be more interested in seeing the Labs team doing some work in the background using some of the cache of hardware for long term testing.

A update of the "Ultimate Distributed Computing Build" say a "Reasonable Distributed Computing Build" could also help.Though I realized this content doesn't get the views necessarily that make it an earner for LTT with some effort on their part they might be able to use their influence for some positive change.

I hope the social team can work along side and aid the folding community and do not seek to control it.

I believe it would would be very unfair to step on those members who have struggled and dedicated a great deal of time to keeping the community and team alive, especially when as far as I've seen the LTT team has done little to help when compared to what many community members have contributed.

So I've not been around that much lately minus shit posting memes. Here's a little life update for you guys.

For those of you who don't know I recently started the process of setting up my own media company. I hired an employee and currently trying my best to find clients. As you can guess this takes lots of time, on top of actually doing the work we need to do to create the content for our clients and ourselves.

Recently I've been getting into the web development side of the business, I haven't touched web dev in a decade so it's a learning curve!

Anyway, to the point Im here to make, I haven't forgotten about you, and as soon as I can free up some time in my schedule I will be looking at running a spring/summer event, probably sometime after April.

The power costs are insane in the UK right now so I'm not folding on much, other than my quadro, because well it's a quadro and about as efficient as my hardware gets. Not looking like I will afford an update any time soon seeing as 30+% of my entire income is currently going to keep us afloat. But hey, I'm not betting the house and I guess that's good.

How are you all doing? How's folding going for you all?

good to hear from you!
also awesome to hear about the quadro still chugging along despite all of your life going on.

Out here i only fold on a single 3090 and my 24 core EPYC 24/7. power costs are just too much right now 😞

What kind of media company did you start? are you even allowed to talk about it on the forum without breaking the self-promotion rules? 😅

I've been folding daily on at least one GPU. Lately it's been the Quadro M4000 in my Precison T3610, but I've also been folding on some other GPUs from time to time, including the RTX 2070 and GT 1030 in my main machine as well as the RTX 2070 Super and GTX 1660 Ti in my office machine.

Earlier today I got a package from Gigabyte containing the RTX 3080 that I sent in for RMA. Apparently they ran a 12 hour stress test on it and determined it was fine, so they just sent it right back without doing anything. I'll be testing it for a few days with a mixture of Folding@home, some gaming, and some benchmarks, and if it fails I'm going to be mad. I have documented proof that this card wouldn't do anything except output a small line of blue dots on the screen prior to sending it in for RMA.

Finally back to 32 cores on my main F@H server!
Ever since my previous 7551 died during last year's folding month i had been using a 7401P, but i finally found a good deal for a new one.

Now if Nvidia started making reasonably sized GPUs again maybe i can even upgrade from my 3090 / 3080 too someday...

I'm going to guess we're in for one more generation of high watt heaters.  Then they'll probably have an efficiency design update along with a process node upgrade at the same time to bring things back to a more reasonable power usage on everything except a Titan/AI server card.

You mean like this or this 4070ti?

I'm waiting for them to make reasonably priced GPUs again.

Though if you want to put it under water you can even make a 4090 a single slot card.

I'll start caring what any of the graphics cards do once they're back to reasonably priced mid range single slot cards without exotic cooling.  Until then I don't game enough to bother with an upgrade.  Everything I do can run splendidly on a cheap APU (or at 90+ fps @2k on my ancient 10yr old 15" MacBook Pro).

sadly the days of midrange single slot is dead...it seems...now single slot low end thats possible.

Single slot cards haven't really been a thing outside of Quadros and other workstation cards in years. I don't see how it would be possible for them to come back in the consumer space unless power consumption goes way down for some reason.

You mean like this or this 4070ti?

I'm waiting for them to make reasonably priced GPUs again.

Though if you want to put it under water you can even make a 4090 a single slot card.

I’ve become a firm believer in water cooling for 40 series. It does make the cost a lot higher, but size wise it’s amazing and folding my 4090 stays comfortably under 80 degrees I want to say it’s usually closer to 70 as well but haven’t folded on it in a bit.  Even in gaming it’s usually closer to 65-70

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

I could see Intel squeezing out something single slot in a 'professional' line likely for OEM's to build workstations with. They seem to have a reasonable handle on power consumption. Yeah or nah?

It's not the slots that matter, it's the fact that literally all 4090s produced are too tall to fit a 4U chassis 😞

Edit: I should probably clarify. I need to watercool it to fit my F@H server length wise, all the massive coolers are too long. I also cannot use a GPU block with the fittings on the rear, as that would not work out tubing-wise, and a GPU block with the terminal on top will be too tall to fit the chassis.

One way or another, 4090 or even 4080s are just too large for my system.

That 4070Ti you posted could be an option, but if I upgrade my 3090 I want to have it be a decent upgrade, not just 2M PPD.

Have you seen EK's new SFF terminals for their blocks? https://www.ekwb.com/shop/ek-quantum-scalar2-sff-terminal-acetal

One benefit of being spammed by their newsletters I guess. They have at least a couple styles, but figured that one might be closest to what might work for you. Most of it I'll never buy, but occasionally I splurge. Man, custom watercooling is so expensive, starting to plan a possible build and it adds up so quick. My HEDT rig is getting a bit long in the tooth(3970x and dual Radeon VII's), waiting to see what AMD releases Threadripper wise later this year before committing though, may just stay mainstream and save some cash. Haven't had intel HEDT in a while, but not much better than current Threadripper pro, both have insane pricing too. Really pissed, like Linus, at AMD for falsley advertising long term TRX40 support, when we only got 1 gen of cpu's. Threadripper 5000 would have beena  great drop in upgrade, if it would've been release. Still a pretty good boinc machine when not tied up with other tasks.

Completely OT, but everything is showing up in Comic Sans font...is this the LTT April fools joke?  Guessing they are running against UTC since it's only 23:32 here (EDT) so not yet April 1!!

[Edit] n/m, clearly AF joke.  My forum search-foo was just poor, found the AF forum thread from 2 hours ago.
