Well that sucks. One of the reasons why I am such a fan of EVGA products is the solid engineering that goes into them. Even their XC line of graphics cards are well built with adequate heat sinks and VRMs and the same quality fans. IMO other brands, with the possible exception of Asus, tend to skimp on the fan quality on their cost-optimized versions.

Likely possible but with Ampere you can only power-limit the die down to 90W as there's GPU clock frequency control. So it would have to be a large passive cooler or remove the shroud and strap some 80-90mm Noctuas on. Not that I've ever done that before:

Likely that card will just head to the recycler the next time the fans die. For under 1 MPPD with it's lackluster efficiency it's just not worth investing any more money into it to keep it running.

Heads Up. There's a bunch of Cancer WUs, (p17618-29) that are supposed to be in Beta that are being found in the Wild. These will only go to "Largish" NVidia GPUs as they are huge and complex but the points suck and they take forever (07:06 TPF on a 2070s).

 

I'm providing feedback on the Beta Testing forum so hopefully they'll adjust the base credit up a bit to make them more attractive.

 

So much for 1. Not having the Beta Flag set & 2. Having my preference set to Alzheimer's

 

Edit: Turns out these were moved from Beta into Production after 3 days. It appears that there's a shortage of feedback from Beta testers currently so if there are any others here you might consider moving a system or 2 back to Beta testing to help out.

I have an undervolted 1070 SC3 which is fully functional and even that is barely worth running on Folding@home: 130-140W for 1M PPD? No thanks. My 1660Ti mobile is more than twice as efficient. The 1060 doesn't go below 50-60W with Folding@home anyway, which is too much to cool passively, and with Gorgon's impressive collection of GPUs it's likely not worth the time or money to get another cooler installed to keep it running the next time it fails.

It's actually not folding but is in an important PC - The wife's gaming rig! It does, however, do Einstein@Home but only when the weather's cooler and we need some more heat in the bedroom (wait a minute, I think there's a joke there somewhere)

 

Likely when it does fail it will trigger replacing the 2600x in the Gigabyte Aorus b450m which feeds it with a 5600x and I'll move either the 1660ti or 1070ti into that machine and pick up another 3070ti to add to the fold. It's just driving a 60Hz 1080p IPS panel so not much oomph is required for the titles she plays.

 

Even the kids aren't complaining (yet) with their 5700xs with their 144Hz 1080p panels.

Yup - they discounted the pricing overnight - ordered a pair of RTX3080 XC3 Ultra Gaming. (hint: EVGA's sales website does not like Mozilla and much prefers chrome-based browsers)

 

Finally after 2 years I'll managed to finish replacing my the rest of Pascal GPUs with Ampere.

 

Was tempted to get the 3070 XC3 Blacks at $440 as they're a slightly better bang for the buck but the 3080s will get more work done.

 

Now I just have to replace a couple of APC Back UPSes that died in the last couple of weeks with CyberPower ones and pick up a AMD R5 5500 for an additional BOINC system I'm building and I'll be finished all the upgrades for this year.

Note that between Turing & Ampere this doesn't work as NVIDIA is using some secret sauce to calculate FP32 performance in Ampere that has little bearing on reality.

 

For Kepler, Maxwell, Pascal and Turing, however, the $/TFLOPS are useful as a comparison between generations.

 

The other factor is the efficiency of the architecture. There's not much efficiency gain between Turing's 12nm process and Ampere's 8nm it would seem which is why they had to increase the power levels so much to demonstrate larger increases in frame-rates.

It is a good time if Nov is the month, rather than the start of it near the end.  It lets us all offset heating during the "can I avoid turning on the winter heat a little longer?" time.  While electricity is set to hit all time highs for cost over the winter...so are all the heating fuel types.

Nice! Is that 5 machines running 2 cards each?  I think all of your 2070s have my 1070s/1080tis beat (though I did power limit them to the max like you had suggested to improve my power draw).  I've been lazy on optimizing the 2080ti and 30x cards tho.

After several years of reliable service my old XFX RX 570 4GB is being turned off tonight. It's been running Folding@home for a very large portion of the time I have owned it, and for the past several months it's been folding 24/7 without issue. Unfortunately one or both of the fans have started to go bad, so I'm going to have to look at replacing them. I also need to repaste the card since I've noticed idle temps are rather high compared to what they used to be.

 

This card will definitely be put back into a Folding@home system, but not until I have the chance to repair it. What a great card though.

Yes, a 2070s Hybrid and a 3000-series in each Folding system except for one with a 2070s and a 2070a.

 

I also have a 1660ti, 1070ti, 2060 & 2060s running BOINC.

 

If you want to be real lazy but save power:

nvidi-smi -i <GPUid> -lgc 0,1500

is a good place to start

For your 2070's were you picking those up used on Ebay or the like, or B-stock?  I was looking at the EVGA B-stock and every model of 2070 Super is $299 now, and most on e-bay are going for about 250+.  Haven't bought B-stock before so not sure if there is any issue going that route.  Since it's coming from the manufacturer figured it'd be less of a risk than Ebay, though potentially at a slightly higher cost.  Thinking about replacing/retiring some of my 1070s...

The 2070s were bought brand new. The only B-stock cards I own are the 2 3080s I just got.

 

3070s are likely a better option than 2070 supers at this point. Ampere isn't that much more efficient than Turing but it is noticeable.

 

EVGA has a lot of Hybrid B-Stock GPUs for the same price as twin or tri-axial versions. Having one of these in a system with another classic card makes keeping temperatures under control so much easier.
