i guess the graph automagically flattens the higher your PPD numbers go due to the scale changing.

still though, i was getting stupidly consistent PPD for a while. Though that fixed itself now

Definitely not flat here! This is what I've gotten from two RX 570s (1x 8GB, 1x 4GB), a GTX 1660 Ti, and a GTX 1080:

 

 

Most of the dips are from a machine with the 8GB RX 570 and the GTX 1660 Ti being powered down. I had to replace the power supply in that machine, so it was off for a couple days. Now I'm folding on all four cards without issue (as long as the heat doesn't get too bad), and I still have a Quadro M4000 to start back up.

Finally got my new folding/office rig built tonight, and I'm really impressed by this CPU. I'm running a Xeon E5-2697 v2 on an ASRock X79 Extreme6 motherboard, and I've got a Scythe Fuma 2 installed on the CPU. After a while of pusing the CPU with both Folding@home and Prime95 (separately) I haven't been able to get the CPU any hotter than 42°. Here's what the CPU is currently reporting for Folding@home:

 

 

The reported PPD is higher than my Ryzen 7 2700, a much newer CPU. The Xeon has 4 more cores, but it's still quite an old chip.

lovely setup! i'll alwas have a sweet spot for V2 E5 builds. They where my first real server platform and i used to run one as a daily for a couple years (2680 v2)

The performance to heat on those chips is pretty insane. As you found out, you can cool these chips with a cold potato if you really wanted to.

Yeah, the temperatures I'm seeing are incredible. This system is currently installed in a 19 year old Antec case with zero case fans, and the CPU is sitting above two GPUs. I left it on running Folding@home last night, and even with the CPU and one of the GPUs folding for several hours the CPU never got above 46°. That's a whole lot better than the old X56xx Xeons I'm used to working with. The X5675 runs warm enough, but the X5690 will give you burns if you touch the heatsink. 

 

So far in general use this new E5 system is WAY snappier than most of my other computers. It's only beaten by my R7 2700 desktop and my two MacBook Pros (one 13" M1 and one 16" M1 Max).

I've got a C612 board with 2x X79. Currently have two E5-2620 v2s in there, and I'm looking to upgrade to E5-2680 v2s pretty soon.

 

E: Actually, may as well go to E5-2697 v2s. They're cheaper than E5-2680 v2s were about a year ago....

i think it got canceled i have seen nothing about it from @GOTSpectrum I think we may go straight in to folding month which if i recall is Oct/Nov time frame... i am folding from time to time currently as i clean and test my computers that have been collecting dust over the summer...too darn hot here to run all the electronics now adays cant wait for the sun to take a chill pill and calm back down...

you got anything specific you're looking for? personally i've seen some (admittedly sketchy) 3090's go for about 700 out here already.

those didn't come with coolers though, just bare PCB GPU's...

I mean I'm not HARD looking, but any 20 series or better is a good upgrade from a 1070ti. IIRC from @Gorgonthe 30 series aernt way more efficient at folding then 20 series, so I dont NEED a 3070.

I'm always watching for deals but not sure what I'd upgrade without building another folding machine. If I find a good enough deal it might be enough of a convincer to finally go to a mining board.

yeah i suspect there will be lots of options for this soon aswell. A seller nearby is selling a couple of these boards:

They look pretty interesting. X79 so up to a 12 core i believe (if the puny VRM can handle it), 5 GPU slots and only 20 bucks a piece.

 

EDIT: i just noticed none of the PCIe slots are actually running at X16 though, but that is to be expected from a mining board.

What I really want are some 3080s that are only 2 slot width not 2.5-3.

 

and no, I don't want low-end Zotac or Gigabyte cards as their fans are garbage and I have no desire to be sourcing replacements every 6-8 months. I have a Gigabyte 1060 I've had to replace the fans on twice now and the bearings are going again. It is such a piece of garbage that I couldn't in fairness sell it when I sold my 2 EVGA 1060s in early 2020 (for $150 each).

 

The only option seem to be B-Stock at EVGA as they don't seem to be producing them new anymore but the funny thing is the B-stock 3080 XC & XC Blacks are currently more expensive than the FTW3's.

 

The efficiency of the 3000-series is better than the 2000-series but only about 10-15% more efficient so not worth it for the premium charged on the used market but likely worth it if your buying new with prices approaching MSRP finally.

 

Likewise I expect the 4000-series to be only another small incremental increase in efficiency given the power consumption being quoted in leaks.

Usually Midweek Madness would be the time to buy, but they've been extremely lacking.in terms of the markdowns. Usually you could snag a 3080 XC3 on Wednesday for maybe $600, but that doesn't seem to be happening anymore.

They have some good prices right now… 3090 FTW for $830, 3080’s for $650.
