Yeah but shouldn't they all be mining? Or did they run out of coins 😛

So at some point I'd like to get back to folding, hopefully this fall once mining goes poof after that ethereum thing.

What's going to be something power efficient and inexpensive to fold with once all the mining GPUs flood the market?

Check out Lars systems database. It lists all GPU's and if you click on any GPU you can find out the PPD per cost for each one.

https://folding.lar.systems/gpu_ppd/overall_ranks

EDITED not all GPU's list this info but a lot of them do. I think most apart from the 3000's

Ethereum is the main GPU-minable coin, and they're planning to move away from that.

Yes, Ethereum is looking to make mining less profitable to the point that people cease mining in an effort to boost the image of ETH as well as control supply to boost value, there will be staking rewards (similar to dividends) instead of mining profits. Should flood the used GPU market with cheap hardware, I hope.

Edit: actual purpose is to make transaction fees lower and more predictable and the network run faster.

really curious what this does to the ETH price. i guess if it dips there is a nice quick opportunity to buy in. i can't imagine it'll dip for long though.

It's in a dip right now, around $1,900. No telling what it'll do but it's mirroring BTC on it's drop from China cracking down on mining.... Which is dumb, if anything that should drive BTC up because if miners can't mine then what you have is more valuable?? I bought some dips before, I'm just gonna keep mining for now. With Nicehash I'm profitable down to like $22,000 BTC but I'd probably keep mining a little below that since big dips usually bounce back and electric isn't a huge cost if I don't make money for a month or two. Obviously I'd like it to all go back up but it's not a bunch of money lost, I'm not a good gambler I guess lol.

Random question, has anyone else seen their ppd really tank for the last few days? I am trying to tune my cards but without touching anything yet my ppd like halved themselves.

I had really low PPD, but it was due to my set up I think. With a 1070 and a 2070 I was getting about 800,000 PPD folding through Unraid. I went to Windows just a little bit ago and already jumped up closer to what I should be. I'm still under what I should be compared to the LAR database.

Edit:

Out of curiosity, what tuning works best for PPD? Core clocks or memory?

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

Core clocks, memory make little appreciable difference as Folding uses next to no VRAM. However, game stable is a lot different than folding stable.  I’ve had a graphics clock overclock that was stable for months start causing the occasional error and when that happens any slight gain from over clocking gets negated really quickly.

As soon as you start looking at efficiency then running your card at the lowest power limit makes the most sense.

Typically I run at the lowest power limits during the summer with a 50-75MHz overclock. Winter I run at about 20% above the minimum which is ever so slightly less efficient but yields almost a proportionate increase in PPD.

As always very impressive numbers Gorgon.

For me I was sitting randomly down at like 5M range not the 12~14M it normally sits at. Was very confusing and looking at it the work unit count was just lower by a lot. The machines didn't patch, didn't crash, nothing out of the ordinary, they just felt like calling it a weekend and having a few beers or something. No clue just low output.

No my PPD has been consistent, if anything it's been up a bit overall in the last few days.

somehow mine has tanked massively. though everytime i check the server it looks like the estimated PPD is still in the 5M+ range. maybe some kind of error on EOC's side?

Makes me suspicious that my power saving settings might have bene reverted back to stock (as I'm underclocking for power savings) that or I just found the points @Pezui seems to have misplaced 😂

If that’s what F@H is reporting then it’s likely not a tuning issue. I have a EVGA RTX 2070 XC Ultra which is based on the A variant and if pushed I can get 2.5MPPD out of it but running it the lowest power limit (125 vs 217W) during the summer here I get about 2.1MPPD

Im using Ubuntu so Windows may be slightly less but the NVidia CUDA improvements recently have closed that gap.

Id check to make sure your preferences aren’t set to pause the card when the system isn’t idle or there might be an issue with the PCIe bandwidth but even running that card on an x2 or x4 it should be producing much better.

Thanks, and that’s running at the lowest power limits to try and tame the heat. We’re in that weird season where it’s hot but not hot enough to turn on the A/C and my basement almost hit 30C yesterday.

Working in my shorts was uncomfortable not to mention the eye strain that put on my kids 🥵

If your not running HfM.net you should. You might have an unstable overclock and failing Work Units. Your logs will show you but it’s quicker to just look at the HfM.net dashboard.

So I complain on the internet about an issue with points. Two days later all normal. Like nothing was wrong. 14m ppd today. Just had two random 5m point days since it wanted a weekend I guess to kick the feet up.

Intel 10900X and 10850KA. NVIDIA 3090FE and EVGA 3090 K|NGP|N Hydro Copper. 196GB RAM. 2x Corsair AX1200I power supplies, $6K in Corsair Hydro-X Custom cooling all wrapped up in a Phantex Enthoo Elite dedicated to supporting F@H (User ID PEZUI on team LTT! 223518)
