I'm hoping they don't completely strangle each other. If they do, I'm looking at a new motherboard. I donated a mobo, cpu and ram last month to someone whose died on them.

the answer is rackmounting, and watercooling. in that order 😛

also @forum userwhy are you leaving? if you don't wanna tell that's fine, but the dramatic exit makes me wonder.

Yeah, but that goes back into the thing I mentioned when I made that thread. Shipping to Alaska makes things....prohibitively expensive and causes there to not be much of a second hand market here.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

Important distinction here is that your systems do NOT become servers like in business style compute clusters.  Your systems just make a web call to fetch a work unit, and then to send back the results.  Other systems aren't contacting your systems.

So while I completely appreciate and applaud their desire for security, running F@H is no less secure than using a web browser to a couple very well known websites.

If it is data cap issues, I'm not sure what that usage looks like.

Here's a list of the servers in use at a given time (in case firewall need whitelisting):

https://apps.foldingathome.org/serverstats

As far as I'm aware, the client still only uses port 80 and 8080, which are both common web ports.

I leave the convincing up to you, but hopefully some raw data helps to show.

As many as you want to.  Use the same username and key on them all and it'll all count as one thing.  I actually fold on about 8 different systems with just CPUs, though they're not generally all running at once except during the folding month event.

Arrrrrgh. Picked up a Fractal Meshify C to move my 5950x system into replacing the Define C which I'm moving other hardware into.

Swapped out the hardware and put it back into production only to notice the 2070 Super Hybrid was showing 88C at 88% Fan Speed and a Graphics Clock of 300MHz.

Put it back on the bench and it appears the pump has died. Started off as a whining sound then eventually went to a full hard-core rumble as I was trying to install Windows 10 to run some diagnostics then the system shutdown.

Time to find out just how good EVGA's warranty replacement is.

I wanted to share a big development in my life with all of my fellow folders.

I don't normally share things like this because it always seems like bragging or something, but all of your collective positivity over the past year that I have been part of the group has really helped me so...

I am a medical physicist. Our job is to perform quality assurance on linear accelerators used for radiation cancer treatments, generate said treatment plans, and provide technical assistance in the treating of the patients receiving those treatments. My training included going to grad school for my master's degree (after leaving my high school teaching position of 10 years), followed by a 2-year residency, and a 3 part board exam process culminating in a 3+ hour oral exam. In the midst of all that, my wife and I moved three times, bought our first house, had two daughters, and braved a global pandemic.

I am happy to say that I recently found out that I passed my oral exam on the first try and am now officially a Diplomat of the American Board of Radiology (DABR).

As I said before, thank you all for your positivity and comradery over the past year. Without knowing it, you all offered me a respite from things and helped me maintain some semblance or sanity. I'm happy to call you all friends.

Cheers and fold on!

I bought 5 of them from newegg a year and a half ago and they’re registered with EVGA.

I noticed last night that there is a fair bit of air in the Rad so I’m hoping that perhaps while swapping cases I got an air blockage in the pump.  I’ve had it Rad up out of the case overnight and have been shaking it every so often.

Im going to try installing it in a Windows system in a bit so I can run the EVGA software as they’ll doubtlessly want that info for the RMA.

Im a little bummed as these have been running 24x7 at reduced power limits in chassis with good airflow so I wouldn’t expect that much permeation as the cores typically run in the low 50s.

Ok. Phew. False alarm.  Got a Windows system up and running, ran DDU, installed precision X-1, Hwinfo64, GPU-Z, NVidia Drivers, Furmark.

Installed the 2070s and wouldn’t you know the pump and fans are working properly. Been running Furmark Stress test for 1/2 hour at 114% power target and the GPU has stabilized at 63C and the fans aren’t even maxed out.

Waiting another 1/2 hour for a WU to finish on the system it normally is installed in then i’ll put in back in production.

Kind of like the kids when they were babies and had gas.  It just needed a good burping to get happy.

If you're happy and you know it, burp and spin.  If you're happy and you know it burp and spin.

Don't think I "can" enter. I'm a lurker, I currently only have 22 posts (23 including this one), most being in the folding at home post and it seems the rules require at least 50, so meh. No biggie, not super worried about it. If you want to throw me in as an entry, I'd appreciate it, but not a big thing if I don't get in.

I have some new hardware too that is pretty fun to play around with 🙂

You really need to put that baby to work. I'd be interested to see what it could do on BOINC.

I managed to get a 3090 K|ngp|n hydro copper with a pile of stacked discounts that worked out to being only $1823.34 USD for the card direct from EVGA. I am curious how much higher its performance will be vs a 3090FE and also vs two 2080 (not supper not ti). I hope it out performs the pair of 2080's for F@H since those are going to get sold off. I am closing in on Mythic status, it will be sad that we are losing some pillars at the same time I am getting so close but such is life.
I post in Reddit about once every 2 months with pictures or a short video of my build since it has a lot of visual appeal and I talk about using it for F@H, and I always get people responding how to get involved in the program etc. Drumming up participation is one of the most powerful things you can do if you have the time. It looks that it will have been right about a year and a half of pushing my machines to hit Mythic assuming the pace stays the same at ~60M per week in windows.
