Don't lump me in with them. I'm an enthusiast of mechanic design, be it engines, weaponry, or productive machinery. Not a guy with a wrench that reads the marketing garbage AFE/insert other "enthusiast" brand that can't legally warranty half of their products.

I fail to see a correlation between people screeching variations of "forced induction is more efficient!!! Reclaimed energy!!!" and anything I've said.

If you can't be civil. Please leave

Edit. That goes for everyone in the thread

its best to avoid ANY year of the N47.

This with bells on. Even putting aside the frequency with which their timing chain tensioners grenade themselves and result in basically turning most moving parts within the long block to scrap, they also suffer a myriad of other issues including wastegate failures, injector seals, swirl flaps and EGR related issues that in some cases have caused engine fires.

Personally I'd just avoid any 4-cylinder BMW engine entirely. Almost all of the recent ones have had a myriad of issues.

yep, exactly ... but the timing chain is the most well known one and the worst one at that ...

what problems do 3rd gen Lexus GS's have? I found a 2006 GS300 with 160k miles for $4500. Seems pretty cheap

Over 100k any car will need a timing belt and water pump unless it has a timing chain. Also rubber parts will need to be checked and replaced if necessary, bump stops, engine mounts, tyres etc. Check battery, suspension as well. That's what i can think so far.

Lexus is Toyota so it should be reliable

I agree with you there. IS’es over 150k all look kinda rough

but it makes sense it’s the “entry” model. Kinda like older 325i’s

im still looking at LS’es/GS’es. I really don’t want an ES. Still prob won’t be till next year tho

We had an ES at work I did a used car inspection on, it drove nice and smooth (too smooth for me) but the thing was clapped out at 100k.

I like how BMWs drive but like I said, my parents experience has been less than stellar. Buying a N20 was their own fault, but the steering rack going out was pretty random. We only really see 4 cylinder BMWs on the used lot here.

The factory exhaust is ungodly expensive and no one makes a direct replacement so you need to get performance aftermarket or muffler shop junk made for it. Other than that and the 'Mark Levinson' sub surround rotting ($20 fix) they're pretty good cars.

Just waiting on my new (used) steering wheel.

Hello guys,

I have an old 2006 Daihatsu Sirion for a daily driver (  yes i know its a shopping trolley ) its in a very good shape for being 14 years old, starts every time, goes on road trips ( even up mountains ), with no complains, AC is cold, and can do 160Km on the highway.

I have a minor issue with the gear stick vibrating slightly but the car shifts perfectly , I wan't my cars to be maintained properly and fix all the issues with them, so what could be the cause of it ? could it be engine mounts going bad ? I believe that the vibration pattern changes according to speed and if you have the AC on or not.

Thank you

Chris

Thank you for the quick answer, can you rank the 3 possible causes from the most likely to be the cause to the least likely.

Also can you please give me a rough estimate for repair cost for each of the 3 scenarios so i know what about to expect ?

Most likely would probably be the bushes in the linkage itself, worn engine and box mounts would make more noticeable movements

Unless you have a Miata, in which case it’s completely normal to see the shifter wobbling around.

this was on 2 month old brand new from mazda (OEM) engine mounts and a shifter  assembly I rebuilt a few months before that.

the way the whole drivetrain is mounted in a Miata is weird. The trans is supported by both the diff and the engine, there’s a brace that runs the length of the drivetrain. So you have the whole thing on 4 little pieces of rubber(2 engine mounts and 2 diff mounts)... so it moves around a bit.

not my pic but shows it well.

Always thought this was a weird quirk of the NA/NB miatas.

Everytime I see an article or a page on some manufacturers's website talking about CVT Transmissions, they talk about how fast, reliable, light, and responsive they are.

But, is that really the case? I mean, it keeps going without changing gear, does that make it faster? If the answer is yes, then why performance cars doesn't have CVTs? Just because we car enthusiasts love the sound and the feel of gears changing rather than the engine being always at max RPM, or it more than that.

My question is:

Is a CVT better than an Automatic or a Dual-Clutch?

or is that just marketing and complete nonsense?

CVT is technically more efficient than any other transmission ... IF done properly ... but i have yet to see one done properly

it doesnt really have gear shifts ... as its constantly variating ... some could call it a constant gearshift.

also im a big fan of DCT boxes for sporty cars, but that doesnt meant i want manuals to die, also current automatics are overall better than many if not all DCT or manual boxes out there
