Anybody know how to climb a 30 degree incline with a 4-banger?

Went somewhere yesterday and had to go someplace with very steep inclines... the one road in and out of the area had an over 30 degree maximum incline and I was loaded with 2 people and a 50kg bag of rice (total around 210kg)... let's just say that the engine and transmission was not happy...

I'm going to be transporting people and supplies to the location in a few days and I need to plan how I do it or risk breaking something in the car...

The brakes can handle bringing them into the area but it's the trip out that's problematic... I'm thinking of loading up to 200kg in people and supplies per trip but then I might have to make 2-3 trips maximum...

stalling is fatal since the road bottoms out in a sharp corner where failing to turn will send you falling off a 60m cliff...

Edit:

This experience convinced me to get a vehicle with something other than an inline 4 for an engine...

Remind me of what you're driving? Yeah that's freaking sketchy. Hope the roads are at least paved. Hit that som'beech as fast as you can and then keep moving. Eeeesh I'd almost walk.

I'm bringing the 2000 Ford Lynx Ghia with the 1.6L Mazda ZMDE engine (that same one in the Miata)...

Roads are paved nicely... but the incline... also need to do a full stop near the top of the hill for security checks before climbing the steepest part (35+ degrees where this road joins the public roads)...

Nitrous? xD

I mean I would say turbo but nitrous is cheaper and works at low rpm. you wouldnt even need much... a 30hp shot would probably do.

dunno where to get a tank nor have the time to look for a place to get and install the setup... also not sure if the engine can take nitrous right now since it's due for a gasket replacement... might take out the air filter for the climb instead...

Yeah that's a decent start.... you might see at most 5 more hp from that... at the top end. Problem is you need more power/torque at the bottom of the rev range and i don't think that is going to help much.

Take everything out of the car you don't need. Weight reduction as much as possible.

all I can say in order to do that safely... can you borrow another, more powerful car or vehicle? Is there a way to rent cars over there? Rent something with a V8 so you have more torque?

gosh why do power mods have to be so expensive all the time..

Nothing... most rental places only rent out i4 engined econoboxes...

I'll also consider taking out the CD changer, spare tire, tools, spare water, extra bottle of brake fluid, and extra bottle of engine oil for the climb only... I'll bring them along for the last trip...

New plan on the tires.

Keep my 14's with junk all seasons for every-day use. Get some 15's and put 200 treadwear tires onto 2 of them, and put a decent summer tire (like a Dunlop Direzza DZ102) on the other two. Literally will find the cheapest 15" rims that i can find, even if they are all different.

I will use the 15's for Autocross and use my 14's with the junk all seasons every day.

I think that will net me the most performance per dollar.

Why the two different tires on 15's, I have a FWD car, so I will put semi slicks on front and the direzza's in the back for dry pavement grip and less understeer. And if it's raining, I will put the direzza's up front since they have more grooves for water. Overall I should have a TON of grip for as little money as possible. If the 200 treadwear in the back will help that much even on a FWD car, I would like to know. Because I think i could squeeze in semi slicks on all 4 corners if I needed to.

My only question is, how many autoX events will 200 treadwear (looking at Direzza ZII star spec's) last me? Here we have 9 per year and the course is pretty small so.. The good tires will NEVER be allowed to touch normal pavement. Just AutoX only. Also if I could get away with worse tires in the back, they would last even longer.

What do you think @warmmilk , @chaozbandit , @MEC-777 ??

Also, will my car roll over with 200 treadwear tires? pahaha... im getting kinda worried about the amount of body roll lol

Oh and I learned 16's will actually be worse for me in terms of tire choices.. go figure.

the whole extreme performance tires on front and max performance tires on rear is a bad idea.  the level of grip between them is huge, to the point where you'll prolly be spinning out.  the general idea is good though, and its been done before with great results with rear tires narrower then the front, but same tire all around.

and the direzza on front if its wet is a bad idea.  autox's typically don't have enough standing water to cause hydroplaning with EP class tires, and they'll still out grip any MP tire by a lot in the wet.

Ok, finally got a chance to reply to this. :P  (Last week was a crazy week).

To start off, having separate set of track and street tires is the best way to go. Both sets will last longer in the long term.

As @warmmilk suggested; Don't mix ultra high-grip with moderate grip tires at front/rear. You'll find out really quick when you end up facing the other way many times. ;) If anything go with same tires all around but wider up front and skinnier out back - or just install a thicker rear anti-roll bar to help with rotation.

R-comp type tires have a surprising amount of grip in the wet - especially if they have some kind of tread/grooves on them. The speeds in autocross aren't high enough to cause hydroplaning or water evacuation issues from the contact patch.

And no, your car will not roll with super sticky tires. The C of G is too low. That being said, I have heard of a Toyota Yaris that did roll due to sticky tires in an autocross, but they are lighter with a more narrow wheel track (width). Your car will slide before it flips. ;)

Leave them at the bottom of the hill so when it shits itself you can repair it at the bottom. Another thing you might consider and I'm being serious about this. Go up the hill in reverse if it's front wheel drive. More weight on the drive tires and if you do stall, you're facing the right direction.

I'll try this out somewhere safer beforehand...

tbh i like 3 spoke steering wheels more. our van has a 4 spoke steering wheel, and it's so ugly, so that ruined 4 spoke wheels for me.

I see that your camera/cameraphone has developed the same problem as mine. Where it makes every photograph look like a dream sequence

The steering wheel in my golf is pretty nice. (Although its not heated which is a bummer after i drove the 2015 V70)

2009_Match_Interior.jpg

The 190e wheel is nicer though.

And my old navara had a really thin steering wheel. Which somehow made it more fun to drive because it felt ridiculous

You two will learn :P /s I've always prefered 4 spoke because when crusing the highway at 65 you can rest your right forearm on your leg and drape you hand over the space in the center if your alignment is spot on. Really easy and relaxing. Its also leather wraped and compfy to use. A little large for my taste, but still a great wheel. (and I can keep the functional horn and airbag)

but on a three spoke wheel i can do that with either side of the bottom spoke. and plus, especially on an m5 it looks good. but i'm considering pulling one out of a 740il m-sport and putting it on it.
