Setting GPU fans to 100% while playing heavy games a good idea?

Hello, I am wondering if setting the gpu fan to 100% ONLY while gaming is a good idea to regulate temperature ( will set back to auto when browsing or idle ). I have a GALAX 1060 6gb, mostly play witcher 3 and PUBG, my temp ranges from 72-78 while the fan is on auto.

 

Any reply is very appreciated!

you can do it. it will help lower temps by few degrees. no harm will be done, except it will be a bit louder while running at full speed. but if you use headphones while gaming, it does not matter.

Otherwise my daily rig is some oem pcchips motherboard with intel 486-dx2 in it overclocked to 100mhz and watercooled with astonishing 24MB RAM and superb S3 Virge DX graphics with 4MB of VRAM for best performance in heavy 3D apps and games and with 850mb WD Caviar 4200RPM HDD for maximum storage space and speed.

Running  Windows 95 OSR2.5 with IE4 for amazing internet browsing experience

all this in glorious desktop case in elephant bone color.

well it's fine. aside from the you'll-wear-out-your-fans-more.

 

I'd really just recommend creating a custom fan curve. setting it to max EVERYTIME you play a game is a hassle to do ahaha.

besides, 72-78°C is fine. hell you can even run it to 85°C and still be "okay".

I found when I set my fans to 100% I usually get a better GPU boost of about 40mhz so I if you can bare the noise go for it. I would just set a more aggressive fan curve if I were you

I run my fans pretty high on my GPUs. Never had any issues with a fan wearing out faster than my upgrade cycle.. Well... I've to be honest, I've never had a GPU fan die regardless. I have a GTX 480 that is super old, and the stock fans are still kicking. So it depends on a bunch of things. But your fans can wear out and die after 3 hours...

 

If you're worried about temps, you can kick them up. But as @Noyu stated, a fan curve is best. It'll go to 100% if it needs to, otherwise, it'll use the curve to balance temperatures. I use a fan curve, but my fans generally stay around 80% with GPU's maxed out, and temps generally mid 60 sustained.

Agreed with a custom fan curve. You'll probably never need your fan(s) running at 100%, so why run them that high? That said, the only harm done is to your ears and maybe your fans burn out faster

MSI Afterburner is really good to use for that stuff. I generally to 25% up to 45 degrees (covers standard browsing and other noon gaming use cases), then increment to 100% at 80 degrees. It runs a bit loud at 65 degrees, but I gave with headphones, so I don't notice.
