Can I upgrade from a 6600k to a 8700k on the same motherboard?

I have a MSI motherboard with a 6600k and 24gb of ram. Can I upgrade to a 8700k on the same motherboard?

Unfortunately nope. Intel decided to make Coffee Lake incompatible with 100 and 200 series motherboards even though they're on the same socket (with the same pinout, i assume).

 

You would have to buy a new motherboard.

No.

 

While they both use the LGA1151 socket, they have no overlapping supported chipsets. Intel's 8th gen CPUs require a 300 series chipset, which is currently limited to Z370, so you'd need to get a Z370 chipset motherboard to support the 8700K.

 

Z370 also does not support pre-8th gen CPUs, so you can't upgrade the board first either, they need to be upgraded at the same time.

Doesn't matter really. No board that supports the 6600K will also support an 8700K and the same vice versa,

No, you can't, regardless of motherboard. You need a 300 series motherboard to support Coffee Lake, and 300 series motherboards don't (officially) support Skylake or Kaby Lake.

I'm more interested to know why it is taking so long for the budget CL boards to surface.  They have been listed on the synnex (major Asian distributor) site already, so they aren't far off.

Yeah the lack of low-end boards is the only reason why I'm not giving everyone and their mother i3-8100s. At $100 with a $50 motherboard, it's a steal. $100 with a $120 motherboard is a harder sell.

  The only reason I can think these boards are delayed is if they want something to counter the new ryzen stuff.

 

It's driving me nuts right now, because I need to upgrade two systems and the cost of the CL motherboard alone is A$100 more.  That's the difference between an 8100 and an 8400 system, which means I get to decide between an 1600x and an 8400 rather than an i3 or r3 which honestly has a limited life span with advent of some games in the very close future.  And let's be honest, right now the 8400 is a no brainer.

Of couse, you can, but you need some Chinese language support to learn how to do it? Also, you are lucky, because MSI motherboards are the only 100/200 series motherboards that is now stable in support of the 8th 6 core CPUs by using some techniques.
