How long before 7700K is out dated?

Hello, so, what I wonder, when will this Kaby-Lake i7 7700K be out-dated?

Mainly just being for games, not sure if games is using more than four cores right now. (Not the current games I play atleast.)

Just seeing that I bought 7700K instead of waiting for the 8700K, last year.

 

Think it will still hold up? All I really need is to upgrade my GPU to get into a more modern style of 'gaming' as I run GTX 970 still, compared to 1070 is a big leap in performance.

 

Just helped a friend to get his new 8700K running and it runs flawlessly, I even got a little bit jealous.

But I also had the thought that 8700K might just be the same as the 7700K without the heat issue and more cores/threads of course, which in his case, helps him to stream alot easyier compared to me with my four core one.

Depends on what your doing, but many people are still playing new games on a 2500k or orlder, so id say easily 5 years more.

How long it'll be relevant is up to how satisfied you are with its performance.

It's probably going to age better than older hardware (ie above me the i7 2600k or something that era) so my guess is 6-8 years between 1080p and 4k.

From buying brand new it certainly is, with Coffee Lake and Ryzen+ on the next corner it makes no sense all retailers still sells Kaby Lake as a last gen product.

Think I just lack the GPU power of modern games, I think. But with the prices nowdays, won't upgrade GPU anytime soon as my focus is to obtain a larger SSD for game storages, then, maybe we will see what sort of graphics card I shall get!

It already is outdated, the 8700k will smash it in every single way but if the 7700k does what you need it to then it isn't outdated.

There will always be something better, but this is hardly the metric for "outdated". If the piece still works for you and isn't noticeably slow, then spending money on something newer is just silly. A 7700K should last you 5 more years at least.

i would get jealous too, But i obviously also would like to have your 7700k instead of my 2600k.

From a gaming perspective, I'm still holding out on a 6700k so not much different from a 7700k. I half debated the minor update but used 7700k pricing isn't budging. The 8700k, comparing new vs new, is hardly any more expensive. I guess I wont expect many used 7700k on sale as what are they replacing it with? It's already the top model of that generation.

From a gaming perspective even a 2600k is still a good performer, so Intel does age pretty well

Ever seen the potato masher series on you tube. He runs a an i7 750 with a gtx 760 and compares it to ps4 inn games. Potato masher usually wins. He has a spin off where he uses the same rig with a gtx 1060 and compares it to a ps4 pro. Games at between 1080 and 4k. It will be a loooong time before your cpu is obsolete

if you are buying new or doing multithreaded workload it's already outdated, for gaming you are good for 3-5 years.

Yep.

Though, was suggested to delid the 7700K but I fear I will break it if I do, eaither clumsy or too much force, already broken too many screws and other minor parts when trying to build my system

I have no problems with my 7700K and I do 1080p gaming and video editing quite often these days.  It should last you a good long time depending on your needs.  Since people are still working 2600K systems, I doubt you'll be hard pressed to upgrade for a bit yet.  Give it time.

True. My i7 2600 is still relevant, and will continue being until it dies.
