Why is Building a PC so Expensive Right Now?

Alexander H

So I tried to build a budget gaming PC on PC Part Picker and I manged to do it. A GTX 1060 3GB, i3-8100, and 8GB of DDR4 ram. It should be cheap, right? NOPE! I summed up the total and it was over $1200! Why is it so expensive if a build like this should be under $650? Can someone please explain this to me?

Because GPUs and ram are expensive right now.

Also you're buying an overly expensive case, PSU, cooler, etc.

The cooler doesn't seem overpriced. And I'm willing to change the case.

The demand for parts is high right now due to crypto miners, driving up the prices, but I'm predicting in a few months all the miners will realize it won't make them as rich as they think, and sell their rigs, flooding the market with more parts driving the price back down, to maybe even lower than they were before.

So more or less, wait a couple months, and then the prices should be reasonable again. Then buy your rig.

GPUs are being snapped up faster than NVIDIA and AMD can pump them out, and the big three RAM manufacturers have been fixing the prices on it for almost two years now.

I though you knew. Coin miners do no wrong. Its us gamers who are the greedy ones for wanting one graphics card, because that get in the way of their greed.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Wait for GPU prices to drop or pick up a cheaper card for now.

i3 8100 isn't a bad cpu,though a ryzen 5 has 2 more cores and you can always upgrade to a ryzen 7 later.

I don't really need to edit. Just 1080p gaming.

I still went with an i5 for 1080p gaming. My experiences with i3 machines have all been terribad.

GPUs are extremely overpriced at the moment due to excessive demand from miners, and RAM is taking a bit of a hit because of the shortage as well.

I would not advise building a PC right now, or if you do, exclude a GPU then buy one when prices drop. (Unless you can find one for MSRP)

I'd also suggest jumping up to an i5 so you don't run into issues with game support or anything like that.

That's exactly why I'm not looking to replace my GTX 560Ti quite yet.
