Should i upgrade my 4790k

HI

I m currently using an intel 4790k and the performance isn't really optimal and I m considering upgrading to a coffee lake 8700k. Is it worth the upgrade or should I wait for the release of Ryzen 2?

PS: I use the computer mostly for gaming, sometimes a little bit of work

I mean the performance of ryzen 2 would basically be the same for single core and just more cores. That is just a guess but it could be slightly better or slightly worse. Honestly idk if the 8700k would give you a huge performance boost either. Honestly I would wait till Intel releases z390.

wait for Zen2, wait do you mean next gen ryzen?

also coffeelake wouldn't be likely to bring additional juice

i have a hard time believing its not performing well for games

what games do you play?

what are the cpu and  gpu usages during gameplay?

is your cpu overclocked?

the 4790k should be more than enough for gaming

I don't know if this has anything to do with the recent bug in the Intel security thing, but right now, with a 1080 and a 4790k at 4.6ghz, i m getting around 60-70fps on destiny 2 at medium setting and 60fps average in battlefield 1 on medium too.

I don’t think you will see the gains your looking for going from Devils Canyon to Coffee-lake, especially with the component market at its current state for pricing.

I for one will be sticking with my 4790K for a good while yet.

I have a cue light I can use to show you when I’m joking, if you like.

If my 4790k was working fine like before, I m sure ill keep it, but the performance now is really poor, no idea why

I play mostly older games so I can’t compare too much, but I played battlefield 1 close to launch and was getting 60fps @3440x1440 with a 1070 max settings.

First steps I would take:

  1. Look to see if an update changed your windows power behavior... such as changing it to balanced from performance
  2. I would next have a look at my system resources to try to narrow down where the performance hit is taking place
  3. Last I would perform a fresh install of windows, or for my self I would just copy my clone drive.

did all that except a fresh install, got the "there is a problem resetting your PC". haven't figure that out yet

I wouldn’t, there’s a tiny difference between a 4790k and 7700k except some higher clockspeeds. So the cofveve Lake chips would just have more cores. I’d really only bother if you’re doing 3d modelling/ video editing or the like for a living and the income increase is worth it.

Bitdefender and malwarebytes and check if it’s not a virus somewhere. I had a BTC virus that was taking away CPU performance and they’re hard to notice

That's an F in the profile pic

I had a mining virus ages ago that took 10 percent cpu and gpu power

didn't notice it for months and months

As much as I want to go back to AMD with Ryzen I find my 4790k paired with a Vega 64 more than enough to run any game I throw at it with ultra/very high settings and connected to a 1440p, 144hz, freesync monitor it is buttery smooth..

Do you have a source? I plan to upgrade to either Ryzen 2 or the next Intel processor.

Sounds like some issues need to be addressed.

My rig gets 100 average on bf1 on ultra 1440.

Havent tried it since the windows patch though. I know it bothers my other pc so I keep them uninstalled.
