Do a search on "Desktop Environments" and make your choice, then about the Distro choice, if you're a beginner go with the *buntu flavors, if you're experienced go with Arch Linux or Gentoo. I prefer Gentoo my self, but currently dual booting with Win10 so i chose default Ubuntu for the conviniance.

It's all a matter of taste basically.

If you are really experience you should go for the Linux from scratch. Why download a distro like arch and then tailored it when you can outright build your own distro?

In my opinion I enjoy using Elementary os because its very cohesive and minimal. It has everything you'll need and works pretty well. They also have native apps for Elementary os in their new App center. Its a clean experience.

IMHO, Solus 3 Budgie is beautiful, and not only that. Also it's stable, fast, useful and has packages you need as usual user (Solus is independent distribution). Now you can install third-party packages more easily, so, beauty of Solus is in inside and outside (I'm sorry, my English isn't perfect).

So you came to a thread about appearances to rant about GNU and licensing you don't agree with... We get it, you're a *BSD fanboy.

Hea, I like BSD too.. but.. is it really fanboy'ism if your OS is actually better?

@Dat Guy I loled at ugly userland. nice one.

FreeBSD is more customizable than Linux is.. or maybe that is not exactly true.. but it's def much easier to do because you don't have to fight with it as much to do it. For example try to customize something in systemd then go do it in rc if your still alive and have all your hair left and tell me what one is easier.

This was my desktop on FreeBSD 11 w/ XFCE. I don't think it's the best screenshot ever (I took it for my wife originally kind of off the cuff) but the point is you can do nice stuff on anything if you spend a little time on it.. even a powerful unix workstation.

Distro don't matter on looks, it matters what it does.

I'm a Mint man, myself. I'm relatively new to the world of Linux and, coming from Windows, I appreciate the works-out-of-the-box and Windows-esq UI approach of Mint for those of us that find the terminal a little intimidating.
