Blurry pictures with my DSLR

Guys, i took my parents canon 500D which have not been used in a long time. it's using the normal 18-55mm lens which came with it.

I tried taking pictures with it but it keeps giving me blurry results, no matter the modes i picked or in any environment it still gives me a blurry result.

if i look into the viewfinder it shows a clear sharp preview so i concluded that it might not be the hardware problem, help please.

What f/stop did you shoot at? And did you make sure to focus correctly on your subject?

Uhmm maybe you forgot to turn the focus switch on the lens? causing the camera unable to focus on the subject unless u turn the lens manually to adjust the focus.

Or since u saw a clean picture on the viewfinder it could be the sensor that needs some cleaning.

Not sure though. never had such issues with my faithful d3300

f4.5, I tried to make sure is properly focused. There's 3 AF modes which between them only 1 worked, which was the AI Servo AF. One shot AF and AI AF doesnt let me take any pictures which sometimes give me the BUSY warning. i tried Manual focus and AI servo AF but they gave me blurry images.

which focus switch ? there's only 2 switches which is image stabilizer and Focus mode (MF/AF). this affects video recording too and gave me blurry results as well. I always leave the sensor cleaning function ON or are you referring to the hardware ?

F4.5 is wide for a kit lens try narrow it a lil bit to F5-6 but even though u use 4.5 the image shouldnt be as blurry to the point its unpleasing to watch.

There must be something wrong with the lens or the sensor.

Have u try auto mode?

The Focus switch make sure its in AF position.

U always leave the VR switch ON.

You can clean the sensor using mirror lock up mode and buy a sensor cleaning kit.

Choose one shot if u are gonna take a picture and make sure the focus point is in the middle by pressing the d-pad on your camera once it focused there will be a beep.

Ai servo afaik is for moving object (continous AF)

Sir @Legendarypoet maybe u could help?

Ok, something is up with focusing. The images don't show motion blur which would be the other suspect. One shot should work unless the light is too low for it. If you use one shot on the flower pattern on the wardrobe, can it lock onto that?

Do you know if the equipment has ever been dropped? Do you have or could borrow another lens to check if it is the camera or the lens?

I have tried auto mode and it's still the same results, I will try to clean the sensor once I'm able to. I'm just testing to see if it's able to become my backup camera, buying a new one soon. Thanks for the help.

It failed to lock onto the flower pattern, I don't think the camera has ever been dropped before. But we have moved overseas 3 times since we bought the camera, maybe the last move broke the camera since it's was kept inside one of the moving boxes. Thanks for the help

Try reset to the default settings or try another lens if u have one or borrow it.

It might be the lens or the sensor.

Anyway good luck :)

U always leave the VR switch ON.

You can clean the sensor using mirror lock up mode and buy a sensor cleaning kit.

The IS should be turned off on a tripod if the lens has no tripod detection.

The main Sensor is not used for focusing in non Live View modes.

If the lens is set to AF and it still doesn't focus try to press the * button on the back top right side of the camera.

Wow, how do you do this ? I tried using AF but it won't let me take pictures unless I pick AI Servo AF which gave me the same resutls as manual focus.

If the lens is set to AF and it still doesn't focus try to press the * button on the back top right side of the camera.

I tried it, but it didn't do anything. if I use One Shot AF or AI AF it won't even do anything if i press the shutter release button and no warning.

I tried to increase the F as @Hiya! said, and it gave me a clearer picture with MF or AI Servo AF. But it's still blurry. Thanks anyways guys

Try reset to the default settings or try another lens if u have one or borrow it.

It might be the lens or the sensor.

Anyway good luck :)

I'll try if the chance arises, thanks.

Well is the lens physically trying to focus? i.e. is it turning making a noise, something idicating it is trying to focus.

Also, do you have a focus point locked in so that the camera is focusing on that instead of trying to attain focus?

It wouldn't hurt trying another lens on there to see if it makes a difference.

AI Servo is the only AF mode which always releases the shutter.

All other modes lock the shutter as long as the AF module isn't sure that the image is in focus.(except for AF on * button)

Is there a blinking dot in the lower right side of your viewfinder after focussing? Please note the minimum focus distance.

Assuming that there is nothing mechanically or electronically damaged with the camera and lens, such as non-functioniog focus motor, or you've somehow turned off AF and doesn't realize it...

If you want to figure out what sort of focusing issues the camera has, print out a test chart like this (or similar you can find on Google).  There are also online guides/tutorials on testing focus, or figuring out whether your camera/lens has a back/front focusing issue.  Can't judge anything from your photos other than the fact that there is a focusing issue.

Unfortunately from what I can read about the Canon 500D, it doesn't have a user adjustable focus adjustment option in the menu.  Sucks.

Follow the online guides on how to place the test chart and how to place the camera.  Usually you need to plate the chart around a 45 degree angle and the camera on a fixed distance from the chart on a tripod so that it doesn't change between different test shots.

When you do the test, set the camera to:

1. Single focus point (best is to use the center point)

2. Shutter release only on focus acquired mode (One Shot AF Mode)

3. Make sure the AF system is enabled of course, check both lens and camera body switches that turn on/off AF.

There may not be anything electronically or mechanically wrong with your camera or lens other than the fact that the AF calibration is way off.  Some low end lenses, and even high end ones, can have this issue even when purchased brand new.  Unfortunately I guess your camera body is pretty low end enough that Canon decided not to include a option in the menu to adjust focusing issues.  Nor could I find out whether there are mechanical micro focus adjustment screws in the camera body, usually next to the reflex mirror in the mirror chamber.  Probably the 500D doesn't have them either.

Once you've done the tests, contact Canon and ask them if they can recalibrate the AF system for free.  If you have to pay, ask how much because it may as well be more cost affective to buy a new lens and when you do, take the camera with you to test the lens to make sure any focusing issues it has is minimal.

test chart

Using that test chart is not necessary to use for the issue you have. Your issue is bigger than a focus which is off by a few centimeters.

Try to get your focus working and afterwords you'll realize that you don't net that chart either.
