Is 1080p really terrible for 27inch displays?

Soroush Taheri

Hi

This question might have been repeated but I am really struggling to understand this. Please provide a link if there are any answers available elsewhere.

I'm trying to choose a monitor for general use and rarely gaming. Also, I have personally liked displays with large screens so I decided to go with a 27-inch display. But accidentally I read a topic somewhere about how to choose the right display and I read that 27-inch displays are terrible if you're planning to run your system at 1080p. Long story short, what I understood from that was that 27-inch displays and larger could only be satisfying at 1440p and 4K.
If we assume that this claim is true, I want to know why 1080p 27-inch displays suck?

it really depends on a few things one is how close are you to the display and the second is are you ok with an monitor where its easier to see the pixels, it might be best for you to try to find a similar monitor on a shop to see for yourself if you like it or not

Its very subjective. I have found that if  playing games or watching content takes up a majority of the monitor's use, then the extra immersion is great. Ideally, you would also not want to be sitting right in front of the monitor. Usually having it at the very back of the desk is enough

Thats not true, there are still 40in 1080p TVs that can be great.

There's a difference between a TV and a monitor -- namely in the viewing distance. A monitor will typically be viewed from 1-3 feet away whereas a TV is going to be viewed from around 10+ feet away.

You can distinguish pixels of a 1080p 55" TV at anything under 7 feet. Alternatively, it's anything under 3 feet for a 24" monitor. (numbers based on average vision)

https://designcompaniesranked.com/resources/is-this-retina/

Personally, I wouldn't touch a 24" (let alone 27") 1080p monitor, or anything less than 4k if it wasn't for scaling issues and/or cost.

I'd say so. My maximum for 1080p is around 23". I'd go 1440p or higher, but it's totally subjective.

It absolutely makes a difference. There's a reason 4k monitors are a thing -- people aren't buying them just to spend more moeny; they're buying them because they do look better.

the best thing for you to do to get this answer is to look at a 27in 1440p display next to a 27in 1080p display, i can sit here and tell you how much i love my 1080p 27in monitor and how i want to get a 34in 1080p ultrawide but all of that is my opinion, we are all different people and we see things differently, to one person 1080p on a 27in display looks terrible but 1440p looks great and to another person they can think 1440p on a 27in looks terrible and 4k looks good
best thing to do is compare them for yourself and see what you like more

What I quoted is an industry standard, not just my opinion. But yeah if you can avoid it, don't get 1080p in 27 inch, unless you enjoy low PPI and blurry pictures :)

Please provide a source for that standard. I have been working in the industry for the last 10 years and I have never heard of any such standard with what's a good resolution for a display and until you link a source it's just your opinion.

Also my images are not blurry on my 1080p 27in monitor, even my 1400x900 display isn't  blurry, only thing that comes close to blurry is my 720p 42in TV I got for free for buying my bed but that was free so I could care less what TV it is.

Text already seems small on my 23" 1080p display, if I want an equivalent DPI on a bigger monitor, what should I aim at? 1440p on a 30" monitor?

Why is SpongeBob the main character when Patrick is the star?

just calculate ppi and look the difference between 24 inch and 27 inch on 1080p and on 1440p, I have a 23,8 1440p and next a 1080p 23,8 . Between those 2 its only apreciable if you had a 1440p or you had both at same time, but for 27 1080?, now im writing on that, for working its not bad but for gaming games like pubg or csgo its worse than a 24 inch waay worse.

It's all about the pixel density, distance to the monitor.

Since a 27in monitor is on your desk you will probably notice the the text isn't exactly sharp, looks pixelated and such.

From my experience this is correct for the majority.

Personally I run 32 1440p and it's fine, it doesn't bother me BUT it would bother many of us.

I do tend to run 125% resolution scaling and that is great for me. I have old eyes and don't notice much in the real world, let alone on a monitor.................

Depends on other factors tbh.

I run a 42" 1080p Plasma becouse i would rather have a 42" 1080p Plasma over a 4k LCD of any size.

However if i could get a smaller 37-40" 4k OLED , i would.choose that over my Plasma.

As a monitor, it's not great, especially if you have good vision.  Everything loses its crispness.  I tried to talk a friend out of it but he wouldn't listen.  He later admitted that he regretted it.

Make sure to quote or tag me (@JoostinOnline) or I won't see your response!

Oh forgot to mention another point.

When comparing 2 different screens of the same size but different resolution, to get a true idea of the difference, what ever is being shown has to be rendered at the same resolution otherwise the rendering quality itself can make the screen look worse than it actualy is.

For example.

A 27" 4k screen

A 27" 1080p screen

Choose a game, and run it on both screens at their native resolutions. The will be a BIG difference. (This btw is a VERY common mistake)

Choose a game, and run it on both screens but run them both at 4k, one native, one with DSR. The difference will be substantialy less pronounced. This will show up the difference between the screens themselves much better, ratehr the difference between renderign resolutions.

Depends on user. But 27" is not ideally for 1080p.

For good quality output.

- 24" W, 29" UW1080p (should stop at 25")

- 27" W, 34" UW, 49" SUW 1440p (should stop at 28")

- 32" 2160p (should stop at 42")
