Ryzen Price Drops

dizmo

AMD's Ryzen processors will see a nice price drop before the Zen+ chips are released.

I think it was sort of obvious this was coming, as a lot of places kept Black Friday pricing or sales for quite a while.

I don't know if this really warrants a news posting, but it might be useful for those looking at used hardware; barter, friends. They're no longer worth as much as they were yesterday.

The 1800x sees the nicest price drop, but the 1600x definitely isn't too shabby either.

My thoughts: Lower prices are good. That is all.

You can get still lower prices and have been able to for a while, in the US at places such as Microcenter and Staples, on a regular basis. I wonder if that will lower prices even more now?

So wait, is a 2600 etc not planned?

Is Ryzen 2 series gonna be exclusively the 2200G and 2400G?

If yes then I can safely still do my 1600 build later.

Tbh, I'm really hyped about it. Ryzen '1' CPUs already offer decent value and yet AMD cut their prices now. Game over for Intel.

We'll have to see if this makes a difference in street pricing, but given the steep discounts in the last month or two I think this is list pricing coming down to meet street.

AMD themselves said April 2018 but what rumors are there for core counts and clockspeeds?

Is it the same core counts or not?

Ryzen 2nd Gen will still be a 8c/16t CPU design. More cores isn't until 7nm with the new uArch.

We've yet to see any leaks about clock speeds for Ryzen 2nd Gen, to my knowledge. Though expect a max bump between 5-15% in clock speed + minor tweaks. Though those minor tweaks could be fairly major for things like RAM speed and latency. We don't know, as AMD has been really good about preventing leaks for Ryzen 2nd Gen, yet they've also dropped the prices of the Ryzen 1st gen.

I think the safe bet is that it's a decent enough bump that they want to clear 1st Gen stock before launching, though the APUs about to launch are probably going to be some pretty solid sellers.

[I personally expect 4.7 Ghz is the top SKU at 8c/16t with the upcoming Ryzen 2800X. I also expect the Threadripper 2nd Gen to have a max of 4.8 Ghz. But those are just guesses.]

If you can wait those 3 months then I suggest waiting. Worst-case-scenario: you'll get an R5 1600 for even less money or an R7 1700 for the price of a 1600 today.

That's a hard one, but I guess the issue is your Budget & use case.

Best case scenario is Ryzen 2nd Gen is 15% faster with a 1080 Ti in gaming. The Ryzen 5 1600 is still an amazing deal, so unless Adobe is the only products your using and you're playing only PUBG, you'll still be happy with the purchase.

All of this always comes down to use case, after all.

Each normal Ryzen CPU costs them between 20-30 USD to produce. Maybe less, in fact. That's the power of the Zen design approach. Small, high-yield parts put together to make bigger parts. A Threadripper part is around 150 USD and Epyc under 200 USD, more than likely. There is some really nice margins on the entire Zen line.

AFAIK can't you already find the R5 1600 for 190-200$ on buildapcsales if u check it frequently, etc. Price dips don't seem like a price dip to me

Buy an R5 1600 now then, it's a great CPU for the price (I built 5 PCs with that CPU so far), just wait for those price reductions to hit your local market :)

i5-8400 killer?

3.6/3.9GHz (2400G) vs 2.8/4.0GHz (i5-8400).

If we assume that "G" processors are unlocked and 2nd generation can go over 4GHz then this is an i5-8400 killer. It is also $20 cheaper.
