Handbrake output file size higher than original

So I ripped the first 7 episode of chuck from the blu-ray then ran the first one through handbrake and the file size is higher than original  by about 1gb i have one 5.1 audio track and one stereo track both in aac

Sane Constant Quality values are between 18-22

CRF targets a certain quality level. The lower the CRF the higher bitrate is used to reach that quality level.

 

If you want a specific size, then use a bitrate calculator to calculate the average bitrate needed. From there on, you can modify the encoder preset (near the left side) to squeeze the most quality from that set bitrate

RF 12 is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too low. The lower the number, the "higher" the perceived quality (thus, higher bitrates, and larger file sizes).

 

The "rule of thumb" for Blu-Ray is RF 18 is pretty much indistinguishable from uncompressed Blu-Ray (You might be able to pick out differences in screenshots, but it's pretty damn close).

 

A lot of people use RF 20, as it's still almost indistinguishable, but saves a lot of file space. This is generally "good enough" for the videophiles that want to rip Blu-Rays, but don't want to store the full file size.

 

Try setting it to 18, and re-encode the source file. Do it again with RF 20.

 

Compare file size vs any noticeable difference. Pick the one you prefer most after comparing them.
