Upgrading DDR3 1600 to 2133 for gaming, advice required

I've been reading around reddit that some games (PUBG, I'm looking at you) take advantage of faster RAM clockspeeds, so I thought I might give it a try, however I'm not sure if this applies to either DDR3 and DDR4 or just to the newer standard.

A couple of weeks ago, I tried installing 2400 Mhz Corsair Dominator Platinum, but my computer didn't like them at all: Just with the XMP profile enabled, no CPU Overclock, it would not work as intended and I suffered from BSODs just the moment I went into Windows. So finally, I returned them.

 

After more thorough research, it seems like I might have better chance with 2133Mhz memory. I was thinking maybe these ripjaws: https://www.amazon.es/gp/product/B00COGLFNE - even though I would be trading CAS10 memory for CAS12

 

Another option might be taking 2 4x2 kits, because they are CAS9, but I don't know if having 4 modules installed instead of two would be worth it.

 

So, thoughts? Which model would you recommend?

Many tests have shown that the only way to take advantage of those increases is to go maxed out to see any difference in performance.   So 3300 or 3000.  There will not be enough benefits to going 2133 in the overall to justify the cost.

I can only go from my own experience... 

 

You see my setup in my signature. 

 

I first ran my system with DDR3 1600, due to late arrival of the ram. After swapping those out to the faster ram, even though the CPU won't support that high RAM clock, there was a significant speed boost in everything. Not only measurable, which in most cases are a few digits on the scale, but really a difference in the feel of the system speed.

This. Most people would state there shouldn't be any noticeable change and then, you come across posts like this and start having hope again....  Did you have to just select XMP profile and you were good to go?

For the system in general yes.  Ram is used more in abundance for system performance on a file system and application setup where processing through high quantities of information is a thing.  In games most of that is taken care of by the video ram.  The system itself may have felt faster but actual numbers in frame rate in pub G or any other game will be negligible.   GPU Vram heads up most of the majority of importance and it is mostly used in situations of higher resolution.

Well, some people run it better than others and this upgrade might be the last one I perform on this system, getting a whole new one being the most likely next one once all this processor issues we've been dealing with this past days get figured out.... So I think, a 150 euro upgrade for a year of better-ish experience could be worth it....

I just enabled the XMP and all was well.

It is most certainly not worth 150 anything for a nothing gain in overall performance

 

DDR4 showed a bigger difference from the look of things, that might be what you're seeing, but for DDR3 just save your money to upgrade the CPU

PUBG will actually be optimized at some point anyways

The games I played at that time were :

 

Dark Ages of Camelot

Everquest II

World of Warcraft

 

And many flash/browser games.

 

In the three above (MMORPG) all felt more fluent as well. I didn't make any FPS recordings though. It is just how the games and system itself felt.

I might sleep on it a bit and see how they do. I'm not that hardcore of a player but the little time I have left for playing, I want it to be as smooth as possible.

Yesterday, I tried lowering some settings like shadows, AA and PS and I saw a major performance boost, and the game still looks awesome, and I didn't have to turn VSYNC off... I hate screen tearing, it's one of the worst things I can experience in gaming, that and 30 fps... god, I get sick just thinking about it....

pubg beats the crap out of x299 systems so faster ram wont really help, if anything try overclocking your cpu, a 4.5ghz overclock will help more than a 2133 ram kit would 

EDIT what FPS do you get
when i play pubg with my 1070ti i get around 140-144fps(144 is frame cap) with my R5 1400 system, my processor performs about where your does so you should be fine

My screen is 60hz so I can't tell if I go higher but judging by the visual performance I'd say I don't get much past 100 because sometimes, when I'm in the waiting map or on the plane or between buildings, I see fps drops here and there. It's all over the place. However, my screen is ultrawide, which means, more pixels to render and I also have vsync on. I downgraded the settings though, aa, effects, shadows and post processing are set to very low, the rest at ultra and I did see improvement without losing much quality. I might try adaptative Sync later and see if I see some improvement

i run fast sync enabled(to remove tearing) with high textures, AA, and medium effects with the rest at very low for the competitive advantage(very low shadows, foliage, post processing, and view distance makes it easier for you to see people as there is less grass and bushes, lighter shadows, and less blur effect when you ADS)

in the spawn areas you cant count your FPS there as its always gonna be low, sometimes i drop to 100fps in the spawn area on both maps but once i leave the plane i get 140-144fps and this is at 1080p

turn off vsync as well as your game will suffer from added input lag and if you haven't overclocked your processor, do that as that alone will clear up a lot of stuttering
