I'm confused about Floatplane Media

Ryois

They have to separate the two companies for legal reasons so I believe Luke is the CEO but Linus is still a part of it, kind of like a board member perhaps?

As far as I understand it (which could be wrong). LMG and FP Media will be two separate entities, so Linus (on paper at least) isn't involved in FP as he is also one of it's content creators (so as to not have any conflict of interest).

Hence, Luke "leaving" LMG.

Sort of like this...except the content creators remain their own entities...they aren't owned by FP.

f8608c40b6753161b3bb88b292d74fd0.png

Basically, "we" will pay Floatplane Media to subscribe to their service and in turn they will pay LMG, Bitwit etc. for access to their content.

They're all completely separate entities working in harmony. This is why on WAN show they mentioned that Floatplane will actually have to pay LMG for renting out office space etc.

In effect, FP becomes a sort of Netflix and the creators are akin to production companies like Fox etc.

Yeah I would assume they have to be two companies. Ok.. could someone else verify this? IDK much about how businesses work.

It is a shame rather, Luke was the best video hoster, I personally don't see the appeal of floatplane to begin with either... I wish the forum contribution fees were more realistic so I could support the only thing I really care for in LMG which is the great forum... videos? eh they make like a good one per month mostly.

Yes you see they want floatplane to be a service that can host several youtubers and other content creators, hence why bitwit is in it, so it is viable to make it outside LTT ambient in an independent branding otherwise it'd be like LTT taking over competition which would sound bad.

I like LMGs videos. If Vessel was still here they would probably still use that. The forums contribution fees are quite high compared to LMG or BitWit ultra.

Yeah. If FP owned the content creators that would be a bad setup.

FP will take a cut of the subscription for FP fees servers, employees, etc and the rest goes to the creators?

Luke is now the COO of Floatplane Media which means he effectively runs it. Linus is still his boss for now though.

Yes. Floatplane Media (presumably Incorporated) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Linus Media Group Incorporated.

So FP media buys/gets the rights to each creator's media? Like Netflix? That would make sense too.

They have the right to distribute it but they don't own the Intellectual Property or copyright for any non LMG content.

There's also holding company which owns both LMG and FPM. To make it legally easier when LMG buys service from FPM and FPM rents place and personel from LMG.

Most likely that is for tax reasons.

Linus is CEO of FloatPlane Media, and CEO of LMG.

Luke is COO of FPM - he does hold a position of importance in LMG, but I'm unfamiliar with his job title. I also believe he's a shareholder for LMG.
