a GPU for gaming? Or do you just need a video output? What CPU?

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Also looks like the board's last generation, so you might be bottlenecked by CPU, but you didn't provide that detail either.

The board has a PCI-E x16 slot though, so I suppose you could put whatever modern video card you wanted on there as long as the board conforms to PCI-E standards.  Whether it's worth it or not depends on your case, power, CPU, mem, etc.

Business machines might not have BIOS updates for newer GPUs, like RX cards just won't run in most cases

Might be helpful to know what model Lenovo that board is in or came out of.

ThinkCentre A70 (type 7099)

it a Pentium LGA 775 era PC

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

I know it's LGA775, but the board was used in multiple ThinkCentre PCs.  Case type and PSU will matter based on that, and BIOS updates may be tailored based on model due to restrictions on what part types were used.  There's also the basic thing where it's a Micro ITX board, and if it came in a small case the OP is limited to half-height cards for example.

The base build is a Thinkcentre A70,

CPU:

The current CPU is a Intel core 2 QUAD q8300, i also want to upgrade the CPU if possible so i would love to know what i could upgrade in terms of CPU.

RAM:

4.00GB of DDR3 ram planning to upgrade to 8GB of ram, 240 - pin.

GPU:

my GPU is the ATI radeon HD 5450, and would like to upgrade to the best that is possible, i would like a GPU for gaming if possible

PSU:

my PSU is a 180W power supply, which will most likely need to be upgraded

its the same board used for this model/series

its a SFF type PC

I have some users using this PC for quite a while

the PSU is a 180W unit

so his only choice is the Geforce GT1030 Low profile card

Then don't waste any money on the computer, and save up for a Raven Ridge APU machine whenever it launches soon, it's not worth spending anything on that machine.

if you can upgrade the PSU, you can stick the low profile GTX 1050Ti

otherwise the GT1030 is the only choice

Soooo...the A70 came in multiple form factors.  Could be mid-tower or SFF.

Either way, PSU definitely would need to be upgraded for any meaningful upgrade.  Half-height 1050Ti would fit any of those.  Would a 1030 even work with the 180W PSU?

Best bet's really to build a new system though...

See i would build a new PC but my budget is around $600 - $650 AUD, not including monitor and peripherals, if you could somehow put together a Gaming PC within that budget i would appreciate it so much.

Then for sure build a new PC, but the issue is pricing, here's a current gen APU system that's basically good for like 720p 30/60fps gaming

And adding a GPU and a better CPU really drives up the price

So I'd probably suggest trying to wait for Raven Ridge desktop chips, but we don't know a real release date, this is the last info for them, should expect maybe RX 550 performance with Ryzen 5 1400 on the CPU side of things for $200...maybe...We have no idea on pricing either.

In any event just forget about the current PC, you could try just a new PSU and 1050ti, not sure on that one vs waiting for the new APUs to come out

It's from the AUS part picker, would be pretty alright for 1080p 60hz gaming, or better yet find a used GPU that's R9 280 tier or above

you have helped me so much, cant thank you enough, do you think it could run AAA games?

@Streetguru

Just look up benchmarks

There's Ryzen CPU scaling for the R3 1200, easy to overclock it to at least 3800mhz

There's 1050/1050ti, preferably you'd get an RX 570, but that's not an option for AUS, for the US at least the 570s are like 30% more expensive for 50% more performance, for you it's just 1:1

so the 1050ti is fine
