Upgrade to 1070 ti or Volta?

Will be buying a 1440p monitor early 2018 (Feb-March) and i would like to game at this resolution so will be investing in a new graphics card.

 

I currently have a 1060, while in some games it will be ok, others like FO4 and GTA V i don't think it will cut out for high settings which preferably I would like to play at.

 

I am planning on investing in a 1070 ti and sell my 1060 to help the payout but im now wondering should i just wait for Volta and buy a Volta card instead of a 1070ti?

just get a 1080 if you are going to wait that long to bet a new monitor, because a 1060 to a 1070ti isn't that much of a stepup for the price, even though youll see a huge performance increase

The 1070 Ti is a 1080 though:

Volta is an enterprise solution not meant for gaming cards yet... thus why only the TITAN V announced so far which nVidia is screaming don't buy this 3200 dollars card to game it will be the same as a 1080 Ti.

I agree, but I still think its better to get a 1080 as you can get 11gbps cards and overclock it further than you can overclock a 1070ti

People pay that much of a premium for a supposedly binned card all the time. A stock 1080 will give you 5 to 10 fps over a stock 1070 ti and will oc just as well and often comes with a factory oc(which no 1070 ti does). 

 

Plus theres the memory thing. If the 1070 ti were less it would make more sense, but not when the price is so close to a 1080. 

 

Im in the same boat. My 980 struggles in some games at 1440 and im weighing 1070 ti vs 1080 vs volta.

My thinking is since it will be early next year when i will buy this we might know more about Volta and i might just end up waiting

Volta Titan was made for prosumers , ie content creators .

the 1080ti is still freaking powerful and untouched and should satisfy a plethora of those who want to game at 4k 60fps & 1440p high frame rates [144/165fps] so releasing a consumer volta is not in the books until later June or so .

 

though im amazed af , 21 billion transistors vs 12 billion in the titan XP/1080Ti . that's almost a 50% increase

Volta is not meant to be a gaming card it's meant to be used for scientific research and therefore not optimised for gaming

Whats kept me is there arent any games im super interested in, so i cant justify spending on a gpu. Im hoping battlefield 5 will ditch the historical war fighting and do something modern again, then id splurge since bf4 is my fav game of all time and ww1 doesnt do it for me.

Actually not even that Titan V is specifically for enterprise solutions like weather prevision, deep physicist simulations and enhanced artificial intelligence... It features identical Cuda Cores to the Pascal Line up and as far as CUDA Acceleration optimization goes they'll get no worthy performance gain facing a 1080 Ti at least as for yet.

As for your 1440P upgrade, are you going high refresh rate?

 

If you are going high refresh rate, I would pony up for a GTX 1080ti.

High refresh rates don't really concern me atm, i don't play a lot of FPS games for the extra £££

The 1080 is only $50-60 more than the 1070 Ti. At that price difference, I can't think of any reason to ever buy a 1070 Ti unless your current card died and you need to buy the best thing you can right this second and can't get the extra $50ish.

What if I say neither desktop 1070ti nor 1080 are binned? Currently binned 1080s go to Max-Q laptops, the rest just gets put into all the cards equally. No brands specify their cards to be binned for a certain standard. Also Factory OC doesnt mean anything since you can do it yourself with software.

The first two 1070ti listing (350-ish pounds) arent correct so ignore those two. It seems that 1070ti costs under 450 pounds each while 1080s start at 480 pounds each. That's not much money, but it is something (especially when the two perform so similarly you cant tell the difference if you dont know the model name).

I have a 1080 and run 1440p at 165Hz no problem. Competitive titles are usually optimized. I can't run at maxxed out settings, but I can run near-max (at worst, the setting just below max) and hit 165 fps in Overwatch and Destiny 2. CS:GO is over 200 fps at max. In non-competitive titles, I happily get around 100-120 on max settings and let the g-sync do its job.
