Amazon's Australian marketplace covers 23 categories including books, computers, music, clothing, accessories, home improvement, consumer electronics, kitchen goods and baby products.

In a move certain to fuel competition from traditional retailers in the leadup to Christmas, Amazon will offer free delivery on orders over $49 with a one-day service in select areas.

Customers buying on the Amazon Australia platform will have their goods shipped from a "fulfillment centre" at Dandenong South in Melbourne's outer east which was converted from a 24,000-square-metre warehouse earlier this year.

Bargains available on Amazon’s Australian website at launch included a Nintendo Switch console for $399 (RRP $469), and the PlayStation 4 video game FIFA 18 for $40 (RRP $100).

Currently prime shipping does not exist, but Amazon is expecting to introduce it at some point but has not said exactly when. It will have an introductory cost of $2.99USD and then $5.99USD/month after 6 months. It will include Prime Video and Twitch Prime.

I hope it will succeed, as it will drive prices down, but at the same time it will, unfortunately, close some of the smaller shops like what happened to NCIX.

Wouldn't the prime shipping you mention that includes prime video and twitch prime, just be amazon prime? :P Cause at 5.99 a month that's damn cheap if it just a prime membership.

just had a browse, everything seems 10%+ more expensive than our current tech stores....

I'm really hoping that is due to that they only have one outlet, whereas umart etc have 5 or 6. As they get more warehouses, it *should* get cheaper.

There is absolutely no fat on tech prices in Aus.  That's why nearly all PC stores both have issues somewhere along the line with warranty and customer service and are with a pigs spit of each other on price.   If Amazon manage to sell stuff sufficiently cheaper you can bet your arse they have some sort of anti competition thing going on.

Has Amazon not been available in Australia until now?

Judge a product on its own merits AND the company that made it.

Amazon isn't available in a lot of places. Most EU countries have to rely on international shipping from UK/Germany meaning you probably only have access to like 5% of all items (usually items marked with Prime/Fulfilled by Amazon). No Amazon Prime either although Amazon has started to offer Prime Video to more markets but that's just a ploy to compete with Netflix and HBO without truly offering Amazon's full service.

Then there's all the other markets where it isn't available 9_9

It's not like you are missing anything anyway.

I used the free trial a couple months back. I placed my order on a Tuesday morning and the package didn't arrive until Monday the following week. How that's "2 day shipping" is beyond me.

The 5 day standard free shipping if you place an order over $35 is just as fast and obviously costs nothing.

Amazon prime is a scam. Or at least the Canadian version is.

What does windows 10 and ET have in common?

They are both constantly trying to phone home.
