It's better to get the newer, better quality CX550M, which can be had for the same price:

It does when you can get either an old group-regulated unit that sucks in 2017 VS a really good unit in 2017 for the same price.

Because a PSU rated at 40°C, that doesn't use Capxon capacitors all over the place, and that's DC-DC, is obviously just as bad as all the other PSUs at the price...

Lol, if quality didn't matter we wouldn't have OTP, OCP, OVP, and all sorts of protections on newer PSUs, plus heatsinking, better electrical performance, higher-quality capacitors, on more expensive units wouldn't matter.

 

If you're seriously going to say that one unit that is objectively better than the other for the same price doesn't matter then I don't know what you're doing in this subforum man.

It's rated for full power at 30°C, so it's quite possible for it to just shut down at well below that temperature during load.

It uses Capxon capacitors, which are pretty crap. So they are more likely to fail. As well as the 85°C primary capacitor, which is also more likely to fail.

Either a sale, or they haven't dropped the price of the older models for some reason, or they figured out how to make a better product for less than the original version, etc.

It's a sale. Price isn't reflective of quality. It generally is, but stock can correlate to weird prices as well. The CX grey is an updated CX, which is the green label one. There's literally no reason to get the older one.

Just know that, in reality, there is a difference. Sure, your PC will not likely perform any different, but your PSU will. One will last longer, one will be perform better electrically, one will be more trustworthy (I.E. it shuts itself off before something goes wrong - protections in PSUs are important), and one will have a higher resale value.

You'd probably love to know I've been putting this thing through 15+ and 8hour days regularly for 2 years straight

Considering that the thing has a 3-year warranty, I am not surprised. The only thing that would likely kill that within its warranty period is a lack of airflow going into it or a power surge killing it.

 

I'll have you know my EVGA GS has a 5-year warranty and has been going strong for two and a half years. Does that surprise you? Probably not. You know how I could kill it? Heavily crossload it, because of a design flaw with the PSU that would blow up the PSU. I could do that with your PSU too, although your PSU can't sustain heat as well as my unit. Considering my PSU was more new than that CX, that's what I got with my money. It also includes a better fan (instead of the awful sleeve-bearing that's in the CX that will fail if the PSU is used in a horizontal configuration), and a longer warranty, as well as the hybrid fan mode and better electrical performance, which reduces wear on the motherboard and hard drives.

Again, warranty.

 

You can reasonably expect a sleeve-bearing fan to run for 3 years at 100% speed horizontally. After that, you'll hear some funny noises.
