[UPDATE] Apple served with warrant to unlock the Texas shooter’s iPhone SE

all these mass shooters sure seem to all be using iPhones. Perhaps a conspiracy theory by the government to paint Apple as a bad company for helping criminals get away with it? Would lead to public outrage against them essentially forcing them to create the back door? Nah nevermind that’s all crazy talk.

To be honest, I think the general population trusts Apple a lot more than they do the US Government.

And as a Canadian, where the US is a foreign Government, often with goals at odds with our own? I trust Apple more too.

If touch ID hasn't been used for 48 hours, the user is forced to use a PIN/passcode to get into the phone.  The authorities know that full well and Apple even got in touch with the FBI within 48 hours of the shooting, probably to remind them about that.

I wouldn't be surprised if the feds didn't unlock the phone on purpose so that they could have another attempt at forcing Apple to create a backdoor which they could then use on all other phones that they currently can't get in to.

How can you not get a corpse and a phone in the same place within 48 hours. We are talking about the FBI here. The FBI surely can do something as simple as putting a corpse and a phone in the same place. And likely, the phone was probably found on the corpse.

You misunderstand. The corpse's thumb was mere centimeters from the phone at the time of death.

FBI agents are pretty bad when it comes to gestalt thinking.

Or they understand using a dead man's prints to unlock his phone would probably end in the judge throwing out all evidence gathered from the phone as illegally obtained and therefore inadmissible.

Next someone's going to say aluminum is aluminium....

It is, minium is a naturally occurring mineral that's contained inside aluminium, is where the name comes from and is the reason why saying aluminum is wrong.

Source?

Aluminum and aluminium come [from] the Latin alumen (bitter salt) where the suffix -ium or -um has been added for the English language. Neither are more or less correct, otherwise the chemical name should be "alum" on the periodic table vs "alum+lead-tetroxide". Also, aluminum is rarely found in the ground in its pure form as it is pretty reactive with nearly anything

Are you sure it would be illegally obtained? You can not refuse giving up things such as fingerprints or DNA samples during an investigation.

Pretty sure, someone pointed out earlier in the thread that death doesn't mean the police can just take what they want from someone.

You can be forced to give up your prints sure but the police can't just take them without a warrant and at the time of his death there wouldn't be any warrant issued.

Tbh there's nothing actually stopping them from doing it as long as they pretend they didn't afterwards, they'd have everything they wanted but wouldn't be able to use any of it.

That's... not correct.

Minium is a Lead based mineral. A naturally occurring form of lead tetroxide.

The work "Minium", and the words "lead tetroxide" do not occur at all in the Aluminium/Aluminum Wikipedia entry.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aluminium

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minium_(mineral)

Not to mention that Aluminum is an actual Chemical Element, so there's no minerals or elements "inside" Aluminum, unless said Aluminum is a compound mineral and therefore not pure.

It's really not that hard to get a warrant -- probable cause is enough for a search warrant.

Considering the priority is to determine if there are any future threats, the inability to use something in court is kind of irrelevant.
