Looking for a laptop - Gaming/University Work

Section35

Hey! Sorry for the vague title.

In the next 8 months or so I'll be moving towns for university, and my current laptop is old and less-than-optimal. Normally I'm good at finding solid consumer-grade laptops for my friends, but I apparently can't take my own advice lol. Anyway, I was wanting suggestions for a laptop that can handle some gaming and university work. I'm studying paramedicine so I won't need anything intense on the university part, just google docs etc. Here's a link to my steam profile and games list, so you can get a rough idea of what kind of games I play (I've recently stopped playing ArmA 3 as often, so take that out of the equation.) I also play World of Tanks on the rare occasion. I'd prefer it to be as light as possible, I'm not concerned about thickness a whole lot, so long as it's not ridiculously thick. My budget is anywhere between 500-1500 AUD.

Thanks for the help, feel free to ask any other questions that might help you, and I'll answer them as best as possible!

Yeah I just don't trust my own research skills for these kinds of things haha, I prefer to have someone else confirm my hunches. Thanks man!

Google is your friend lol. From experience of my own I like Alienware, Asus, and MSI.

nah, laptop website guide and recommendations are pretty much suck, also brands don't matter much in laptops

What are your requirements? eg good display, portable, long battery life, good input devices etc

Decent display, nothing super badass, maybe 1080p? Portable, I don't want it to be ridiculously thick, but a little thickness is alright. So long as the battery can last me a day at university or so, that's all good, a few USB ports, maybe an SD port, a CD drive if that's possible.
