I would like to point out one of the questions posed to Tim Cook by Senator Al Franken after the Face ID was announced:

 

"What safeguards has Apple implemented to prevent the unlocking of the iPhone X when an individual other than the owner of the device holds it up to the owner's face?" 

 

In a world where your smartphone knows more about you than your significant other and has access to pretty much all of the services that you use, the question asked above is of paramount significance. Like many other smartphones, iPhone has many security features built in such as encryption and data protection, network and app security, and numerous device and privacy controls. If all of the protection settings are used right, the biggest risk comes from someone having physical access to your phone. Once a malicious person has found a way to hack into your phone, even encrypted data can be accessed.

 

Sucks for people who bought one I guess as Apple treated them to become beta testers and it costs those beta testers $1000. I have doubted Face ID ever since Apple announced the iPhone X this year and it shows an oversight from Apple.

So if you look a lot like your mom or dad, return that iPhone X, get a refund and get the iPhone 8 Plus instead. It has the same A11 Bionic SoC which is crazy fast. Animoji is a silly gimmick and the camera of the iPhone 8 Plus is ranked very high by tech reviewers and DxO Mark. Little did Apple realize that even identical twins don’t have the same fingerprints. Apple have shown the tech industry how to make a very good fingerprint scanner with the iPhone 5s and it simply put the Galaxy S5’s swipe pad fingerprint scanner to shame. Why can’t Apple simply use what works for them? 

As for me, iPhone 8 Plus all the way. I already consider Apple’s move to OLED a bad idea and so is the Face ID of the iPhone X. In actuality, even identical twins don’t share the same fingerprints and more so a kid who looks like mom or dad. So in my opinion, Face ID is a flop and a beta feature unlike Touch ID which was ready for prime time ever since the iPhone 5s. https://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/06/science/06qna.html

That would be a step back, though. But that's sort of what Apple has been doing lately, replacing an integrated headphone jack with an adapter.

My Apple ID password is 16 character long I don’t feel like typing it all the time whenever I’m buying something from iTunes. I look a lot like my father and with Touch ID, I’m not worried that my father or any of my family members or friends would unlock my iPhone.

but wouldn't that mean that even if she set it up in good lighting that the phones sensors clearly don't work well at low lighting anyway?

wouldn't the initial scan be much more intensive that the following simple unlock scans?

The headphone jack was unnecessary, you don't need an adapter if you have wireless or lightning connector headphones.

And using a pin to get into a phone is not a step back, it is just an alternative.

 

In case you didn't notice, almost all devices that use fingerprint, eye scan, or facial scan will have you set up a pin anyway as a backup to get into the device when the other technologies fail.

Guess why? Because it's the most reliable.

Then those people can use a shorter password.

And just fyi, the password to get into the phone does not need to be the apple id password, it can just be the standard 4 digit pin that 90% of people use.

IPS LCD may not have the same deep blacks and high contrast of OLED but IPS LCD lasts longer. 

 

I think Apple was simply testing out the waters of OLED with the iPhone X but who knows? Maybe Apple’s own color calibration would keep the OLED display last longer. ??‍♂️

I ride public transportation all the time. With Touch ID, I’m not worried that the person beside me or at my back are looking at my 6-digit passcode when I unlock my iPhone. Same goes when I’m with friends.

It could also be a requirement for minimal bezels as the backlight for an LCD needs to go somewhere. And I've yet to find any decent information on the amount of space required for either an edge backlight or a direct backlight (although I would assume a direct backlit device would be significantly thicker).

If you're concerned about the person next to you looking over your shoulder and then stealing your phone....well, I'm sorry to say this, but if they're going to steal your phone from you, then there's also a good chance they'll be willing to knock you out and just use your fingerprint anyway. Or they could just grab it the second you unlocked it.....

I’m concerned about pickpockets when I’m in a bus or train. The moment I unlocked my phone with a passcode just to text or call someone, the pickpocket near me could’ve seen my passcode by then and once I slipped it back to my pocket, the crook could’ve unlocked my phone. You know pickpockets are very stealthy when stealing.

The same type of person who would also steal someone's phone. It's not exactly hard to hit someone, grab their phone, and step out the closing door. And again, he could just wait until you unlock it and grab it then. And if that's the thing you're worried about, then FaceID is plenty secure (although, frankly, no method is secure in that scenario).

Burn in. OLEDs burn in like CRTs did when displaying stuff in the same place. And displaying stuff in the same place is what phones do.

I was looking at my old Galaxy Note 2 two weeks ago and I noticed that whites are becoming yellow.

Damn I remember that on tube TVs, couldn't have static images on it for too long or else it could get stuck on the screen for good.

 

I really had no idea that OLED had this issue... I have never really paid much attention to this technology as I'm happy with any IPS panel already but we often see Linus and other big deal folk praising OLED for its magnificence and I do must say it is a bloody irony that it suffers from such an oldschool issue.

And its a shame too. I like the image quality on my phone but I've pretty badly burned in my keyboard and telegram into the display, owning the phone for only a couple months.

 

I was able to avoid it on my nexus 6p by inverting the black/white often via a quicksetting toggle, but guess what asus broke? The trigger that enables that easy toggle.

Actually they simply burn out, they don't really function like plasmas or CRTs, it doesn't matter if the image is static or not they'll still become discolored

I also would like ask why Linus called iOS 11 awesome on a WAN  show episode when in fact iOS 11 is the buggiest iOS release ever. Way buggier than iOS 7 when it launched.

Although its not like a plasma, it is like a CRT. Both have phosphors that "wear out" over time. Using the pixel causes it to slowly dim.
