It will all depend on how far away you sit and what the use is. I think the GameBoy is quite usable and sharp enough for its use, but it would be unusable in a typical desktop usage. Just like that you can't really simply say one thing or another (IMO).

what do you mean gpu hardware isn;t there yet? the new titans run 4K with ease, especially on water or in SLI.

also, 4K isn't that expensive anymore

I would say 2560x1440 at a minimum. I can use lower but the lack of screen real estate is annoying. If it's for any scaled content it depends on the screen size and media. i could probably game or watch films at lower resolutions

Good 4k monitors anyway, cheap 4k monitors look like shit compared to a similarly priced 1080p monitor.

I said Mainstream GPU hardware isn't there yet.

 

When a x60 Nvidia GPU or x80 AMD GPU runs 4K 60 fps on almost all titles at max settings then it'll be mainstream.

I use my 1680x1050 monitor more than both of my 1080p monitors (both of which are nicer). It's more than usable.

It depends on the size of the screen....On a 6" screen, 1080p is perfect. On a 13-15" screen, I want >QHD, on a 24"+ screen, I want 4k. 

 

1080p is usable on a 24"+ monitors, but there isn't enough screen space and it doesn't look perfectly crisp good for everyday use.

Windows actually is unusable (not subjectively, I mean literally, essential things won't fit on the screen) at approx. 800 x 600 or less iirc.  It may even be more like 1024 x 768 now...

it depends on screen size and how far away i am.

the gameboy classic used 160x144, but its a 4.7cm screen and im 6in away.

my monitor is 1920x1080, on a 17in and im about a foot away, its fine.

 

i dont think phones need to be bigger than 720(especially not 4k, thats rediculous)

but 1080 is fine for most things

Chrome OS does fine at 480p. Under that it stops being usable.

The saying once you go 4k you don't back... I can say that statement is true for me, as I am typing on a 4k display right now. And btw a 980 TI Strix runs a 4k display just fine. I'm idling at 37c on my GPU and the fans are off. While gaming I sit at around 65c and can play nearly any game with just messing with the settings a little (Mostly high, some medium, a few games run ultra).
