Building my own laptop!

So ive been working on a project for a bit where im making my own laptop. The first two videos are out on my youtube channel and they are very vlog like but im hoping to improve the quality in the next part. I have been in finals and havent had the best of chances to edit the videos. I only have one final left so hopefully that will give me some more time to work on this project. Right now I am using desktop grade hardware and its a bit large bt ive been constantly shrinking it so hopefully  I can get it in a 15" laptop form factor.

 

Part 1:

This is me starting the project and showing off my ideas. I started with high hopes before getting realistic. In this video I mainly plan the build and explain my hardware:

cpu:q9400

motherboard: intel micro atx board

gpu: hd 5870

power supply: tfx 450 watt unit

ram: 4gb of ddr2

This is part one: 

 

 

Part 2: In tis video I start the main build and idea scheme of the project. I build my laptop in its 19-20" form actor as my first project and it boots up great!

Part 3: I improve my production quality massively and try to make my videos better all the time! I am able to get the laptop down to a thick 15" form factor but it is massively better than before. 

 

 

 

Part 4: The big and final decision. Make this a thick laptop or a thin laptop with a small form factor pc that it is tethered too. Leave your vote in the comments! Im hoping that this is the last and final build video, Where we build up the laptop and prepare it for part 5, where we show it off. That also means there will be another break between now and part 4. Or I can make this a 6 part series and have 2 shorter updates. I dont know what people prefer. Thanks!

I will update this post when I release a new part and keep the section where the video goes updated in terms of my status. My main predicament right now is whether or not to get a thin mini-itx board or something like that or too make a custom shroud for my graphics card and cpu cooler. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

yes  Ill eventually make a case for the parts or use and old 15" laptop case. Ive found quite a few old broken macbook pros for around $20 so that wouldnt be a terrible option for a case. Or I can keep on using cardboard!

Ill finish it  might take me a while but ill finish it. Its definitly a lot harder than building a standard computer because airflow and size is so much of a concern and every cubic centimeter counts

MBP would be too thin for a desktop rig, no?

ya. I was able to get an old hp dv6000 laptop and i stripped it down and am going to use the case for the laptop. Its a little thicker and longer than a mbp and it was cheaper so hopefully this will work well. I sanded out the inside and made it clean and ready for use!

Im having a thought here. The next part of rhe series will either be coming out tommorow or monday. But i have an idea. What if i make a small form dactor build and put it into a backpack or something of that sort and the have the laptop connected to it via a cable or somehow wirelessly do it. The main problem im having is thickness. This laptop is going to be thick in its current form. Any suggestions woukd be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

 

I can also continue the laptop in its current form. With it just being a thick laptop.

I'd keep it a bit thicker.

Cooling will suffer the thinner you go.

I'm quite curious to see how this project turns out, since I recently get myself a bare bones Clevo (pretty much the same thing, but a bit .. more assembled).

Its been the quite the project. The whole project is about minimizing empty space lol. Im getting to the point where the real building is going to start though so he videos should get more interesting! I thought about getting a barebones but the diy part of my mind wanted to build from scratch so hopefully i dont suffer from that.

That heat pipe isn't going to work. they contain a gas in them that allows it to work to bending, breaking will cause it to not work.

I known its been a while but ifinally finished the laptop project. Is anyone still interested in seeing the final part? Sorry it took so long i got really busy over the holidays and didnt have much time along with a part taking 6 weeks to ship to me.

Love the idea could be worth looking at getting a second-hand server PSU of eBay as they tend to be a lot more compact, and with a little research you could easily graft the cables you need into the power supply provided you stay safe and use crimp connectors and heat shrink etc, here is an example https://goo.gl/DmyBJP
